Linking Switzerland's PM10 and PM2.5 oxidative potential (OP) with emission sources

Stuart K. Grange et al.

Summary: Particulate matter (PM) is a major air pollutant with significant health effects. Current monitoring methods do not provide information on the biological toxicity of PM. A sampling campaign in Switzerland showed that oxidative potential (OP) of PM varies over time and space. Metal components and specific organic tracers from wood combustion were identified as the most important factors in explaining and predicting OP. Controlling anthropogenic road traffic and wood burning sources can effectively reduce OP and potential biological harm.

Overview of the French Operational Network for In Situ Observation of PM Chemical Composition and Sources in Urban Environments (CARA Program)

Olivier Favez et al.

Summary: The CARA program, led by the French reference laboratory for air quality monitoring and regional monitoring networks since 2008, aims to enhance the national level understanding of particulate matter chemistry and origins in urban environments. The program has resulted in strong collaborations with international academic partners to produce state-of-the-art results and methodologies for air quality stakeholders and decision makers. Studies have highlighted the major influences of residential wood burning, road transport emissions, mineral dust, and primary biogenic particles on air quality, as well as long-range transport phenomena such as the advection of aerosols from European continental sectors and Saharan dust into French West Indies. Additionally, stable isotope measurements and organic molecular markers have been used for a better understanding of the origins of ammonium and organic aerosol fractions.

Source apportionment of atmospheric PM10 oxidative potential: synthesis of 15 year-round urban datasets in France

Samuel Weber et al.

Summary: The study investigated the oxidative potential of particulate matter (PM) and conducted source apportionment analysis for PM10 samples collected in France from 2013 to 2018. The results showed distinct redox activity of various sources (such as road traffic, biomass burning, dust, MSA-rich, and primary biogenic sources) towards OP, with road traffic being the dominant contributor. Prioritizing residential wood burning and road traffic sources may significantly reduce the oxidative potential in western Europe and potentially lower the health risks associated with PM exposure.

Simulation of primary and secondary particles in the streets of Paris using MUNICH

Lya Lugon et al.

Summary: High particle concentrations in urban streets are difficult to replicate using regional-scale chemistry-transport models due to their limited spatial resolution. A new local-scale model, MUNICH, is introduced in this study to address this issue by integrating background concentrations from a regional-scale model and incorporating complex chemistry for secondary aerosol formation. Gas-phase chemistry significantly influences NO2 formation while having less impact on condensables, with assumptions about gas/particle mass transfer being crucial in modeling. Ignoring gas-phase chemistry and aerosol dynamics tends to underestimate organic concentrations in urban streets.
