Reduction in concentration of PM2.5 in India's top most polluted cities: with special reference to post-lockdown period

Subham Roy et al.

Summary: The study shows that during the lockdown in India, there was a significant improvement in air quality with a reduction in PM2.5 concentration. After the lockdown, the concentration remained stable, suggesting that further lockdown measures could be considered in the future to restrict emissions effectively.

Compositional changes of PM2.5 in NE Spain during 2009-2018: A trend analysis of the chemical composition and source apportionment

Marten in 't Veld et al.

Summary: The study revealed a significant decrease in PM2.5 concentrations in Barcelona and Montseny from 2009 to 2018, driven by reductions in the levels of chemical species and anthropogenic source contributions, mainly from heavy oil combustion, mixed combustion, industry, and secondary sulfate. While source contributions showed a continuous decrease over the study period, the trends of heavy oil combustion and secondary sulfate have flattened since 2016.

Winter Air Pollution from Domestic Coal Fired Heating in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Is Strongly Associated with a Major Seasonal Cyclic Decrease in Successful Fecundity

Jargalsaikhan Badarch et al.

Summary: The increasing pollution of the environment, particularly air pollution, is significantly impacting the health and reproductive health of the population in Ulaanbaatar. The study reveals the seasonal variations in conception rates leading to live births, as well as the extreme levels of pollution and temperature in Ulaanbaatar. These findings emphasize the urgent need for solutions to mitigate the health risks associated with air pollution in Ulaanbaatar, such as transitioning to cleaner sources of heating.

Long-term trends of PM2.5 and its carbon content in the South Coast Air Basin: A focus on the impact of wildfires

Faraz Enayati Ahangar et al.

Summary: The implementation of stringent regulations over the past two decades in California's South Coast Air Basin (SCAB) has significantly reduced the concentrations of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) along with its carbonaceous content. While emissions from anthropogenic sources are decreasing, sources like wildfires are becoming increasingly significant. Wildfires and other factors, such as dry conditions and forest management practices, have contributed to the increased frequency and intensity of wildfire events in California, potentially offsetting the improvements in air quality due to reduced anthropogenic emissions. Analysis of PM2.5 measurements from 2004 to 2018 at urban and remote sites in SCAB showed reduced annual concentrations with larger reductions in urban areas compared to remote regions. The study found the impact of wildfires on PM2.5 levels to be more significant in remote sites, with statistically significant increases in the contribution of wildfire and secondary organic carbon sources in these regions.

Urban Air Quality Studies in Mongolia: Pollution Characteristics and Future Research Needs

Tseren-Ochir Soyol-Erdene et al.

Summary: In recent decades, Mongolia has experienced rapid population growth, urbanization, and industrialization, leading to significant air pollution issues, especially in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. However, due to limited research capacity and collaborations, the country has a limited understanding of air pollution, requiring further studies to develop strategies to mitigate its impact.
