Possible non-thermal origin of the hard X-ray emission in the merging galaxy cluster SPT-CL J2031-4037

M. S. Mirakhor et al.

Summary: In this study, the high-energy X-ray emission of the merging galaxy cluster SPT-CL J2031-4037 is analyzed using NuSTAR observations. The results suggest the presence of a non-thermal component in the hard X-ray emission, and estimate the volume-averaged magnetic field strength of the cluster.

Non-linear diffusive shock acceleration: A recipe for injection of electrons

Bojan Arbutina et al.

Summary: Study finds that in the later stages of shock evolution, the suprathermal part of ion spectra fades, leaving the spectra composed of Maxwellian and power law components. Once electron and ion spectra flatten and become parallel, the amounts of cosmic ray ions and electrons also become similar. The injection rule applied to models helps relate micro and macro-scale physics and obtain particle spectra.

Electron Acceleration at Rippled Low-mach-number Shocks in High-beta Collisionless Cosmic Plasmas

Oleh Kobzar et al.

Summary: Using large-scale fully kinetic two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, the effects of shock rippling on electron acceleration at low-Mach-number shocks propagating in high-beta plasmas were investigated. It was found that the electron-acceleration rate increases considerably when the rippling modes appear, with the main acceleration mechanism being stochastic shock-drift acceleration. Multiscale magnetic turbulence at the shock transition and the region behind the main shock overshoot are essential for electron energization, leading to wide-energy non-thermal electron distributions formed both upstream and downstream of the shock. The downstream electron spectrum was shown for the first time to have a power-law form with index p approximate to 2.5, consistent with observations.

γ-ray detection toward the Coma cluster with Fermi-LAT: Implications for the cosmic ray content in the hadronic scenario

R. Adam et al.

Summary: The presence of relativistic electrons and cosmic ray protons in galaxy clusters has been confirmed by deep radio observations. The origin of these particles is still being studied and recent detection of gamma-ray emission towards the Coma cluster provides new insights. By analyzing Fermi-LAT data and building a physical model of the Coma cluster, researchers aim to explore the implications of this signal on the cosmic ray content and compare it with observations at other wavelengths.

Magnetic Field Amplification by the Weibel Instability at Planetary and Astrophysical Shocks with High Mach Number

Artem Bohdan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the amplification of magnetic field within nonrelativistic perpendicular shocks through large-scale particle-in-cell simulations. It is found that the magnetic field is amplified at the shock transition due to ion-ion two-stream Weibel instability and strongly correlates with the Alfvenic Mach number. Measurements derived from particle-in-cell simulations are consistent with those taken at Saturn's bow shock by the Cassini spacecraft.

Microinstabilities in the Transition Region of Weak Quasi-perpendicular Intracluster Shocks

Sunjung Kim et al.

Summary: Microinstabilities have been found to play crucial roles in entropy generation and particle acceleration in collisionless shocks. Analysis of these microinstabilities in the high-beta region of the intercluster medium has revealed that ion and electron temperature anisotropies can induce various instabilities, leading to the generation of plasma waves with different scales and properties.
