Planetary Nebulae: Sources of Enlightenment

Karen B. Kwitter et al.

Summary: This review/tutorial explores the roles of planetary nebulae in the evolution of low-to-intermediate-mass stars, their contributions to the mass and chemical enrichment of interstellar medium, and their importance as astrophysical laboratories. It discusses various observed properties of planetary nebulae, with a particular focus on element abundance determinations and their comparison with theoretical predictions. The presence of dust and molecules in planetary nebulae is also considered. The study further examines distances, binarity, and the morphology and evolution of planetary nebulae. The paper concludes by mentioning potential advancements that future observing capabilities could bring.

Line Identification and Excitation of Autoionizing States in a Late-type, Low-mass Wolf-Rayet Star

Robert Williams et al.

Summary: A large number of previously unidentified lines in the complex spectrum of the low mass, late-type LMC [WC11] star J060819.93-715737.4 have been identified using electronic databases. The study shows that resonance fluorescence between the C ii ground state and excited AI levels is an important photoabsorption process competitive with dielectronic recombination in exciting AI emission lines in stellar winds. Additionally, the presence of numerous C ii quartet multiplets in emission indicates high wind densities in the emission region enhancing collisional transfer between doublet and quartet states.
