Significant Dust-obscured Star Formation in Luminous Lyman-break Galaxies at z ∼ 7-8

Sander Schouws et al.

Summary: The study uses ALMA observations to probe dust-obscured star formation in luminous Lyman-break galaxies at z~7-8, resulting in the discovery of a significant number of dust-detected galaxies. The findings are most consistent with an attenuation curve between SMC and Calzetti and indicate marginal evolution of IRX-stellar mass relationship from z~0.

The Physical Properties of Luminous z ≳ 8 Galaxies and Implications for the Cosmic Star Formation Rate Density from ∼0.35 deg2 of (Pure-)Parallel HST Observations*

Guido Roberts-Borsani et al.

Summary: This article presents the largest systematic search for luminous z greater than or similar to 8 galaxy candidates using Hubble Space Telescope data. Through near-infrared color cuts and careful analyses, 31 z greater than or similar to 8 galaxy candidates were found with their global properties derived. The follow-up observations further validate the results and provide valuable targets for future observations.

SILVERRUSH. XII. Intensity Mapping for Lyα Emission Extending over 100-1000 Comoving Kpc around z ∼ 2-7 LAEs with Subaru HSC-SSP and CHORUS Data

Shotaro Kikuchihara et al.

Summary: Intensity mapping is used to study the extended diffuse Lyα emission around Lyα emitters (LAEs) at redshifts of approximately 2-7. The emission is detected at 100-1000 comoving kpc around z = 3.3 and 5.7 LAEs, and tentatively at z = 6.6. The emission is as diffuse as 10(-20)-10(-19) erg s(-1) cm(-2) arcsec(-2) and extends beyond the virial radius of a dark matter halo. The intrinsic Lyα surface brightness profiles increase with redshift, possibly due to increasing hydrogen gas density. The emission is likely powered by resonantly scattered Lyα photons.

The rapid transition from star formation to AGN-dominated rest-frame ultraviolet light at z ≃ 4

R. A. A. Bowler et al.

Summary: With the development of deep optical-to-near-infrared extragalactic imaging, a study was conducted to investigate the transition between SF- and AGN-dominated systems at z similar to 4 in the rest-frame UV. The results showed a rapid transition to AGN-dominated sources around M-UV similar to -23.2, and the rest-frame UV morphology, size-luminosity relation, and available spectra were analyzed to derive the rest-frame UV luminosity function for the SF- and AGN-dominated subsamples. Additionally, a simple model was used to predict the rest-frame AGN LF from the z = 4 galaxy LF, revealing the increasing impact of host galaxy light on the measured morphology of faint AGN.

R. Herrera-Camus et al.

Summary: The new ALMA observations of the star-forming galaxy HZ4 at a redshift of approximately 5.5 reveal relationships between [CII] line emission, star formation rate, and far-infrared emission on spatial scales of about 2 kpc. Evidence of outflowing gas and diffuse [CII] emission beyond the star-forming disk indicate potential roles in the galaxy's evolution.

Ultrafaint [C ii] Emission in a Redshift=2 Gravitationally Lensed Metal-poor Dwarf Galaxy

Matus Rybak et al.

Summary: Observations of the strongly lensed EELG SL2S 0217 at redshift z = 1.8 show tentative detection of the [C ii] line and no detection of CO(2-1) emission. Photoionization modeling suggests that up to 80% of the [C ii] emission may originate from neutral or molecular gas, in line with some predictions.

Summary: The article introduces a new method to reliably constrain dust temperature at high redshifts by combining dust continuum information with [C II] 158 μm line emission. Solutions to uncertainties regarding dust mass, FIR luminosity, and obscured fraction of star formation rate are provided, and the cosmic evolution trend of Sigma (H2) / Sigma (gas) is predicted.

ALMA multiline survey of the ISM in two quasar host-companion galaxy pairs at z > 6

A. Pensabene et al.

Summary: This study conducted a multiline survey of two z>6 quasar host galaxies and their companion galaxies using ALMA, aiming to understand the impact of star formation and black hole feedback on the interstellar medium. Analysis of the FIR continuum and FSLs provided insights into the contributions from neutral medium in photodissociation regions, as well as the dominance of PDRs and X-ray dissociation regions in CO emission. The findings shed light on the physical conditions in the early massive galaxies emerging from cosmic dawn.

High [O III]/[C II] surface brightness ratios trace early starburst galaxies

L. Vallini et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the observed [OIII]88μm/[CII]158μm surface brightness ratios in nine galaxies at z≈6-9 are primarily dependent on the 'burstiness' parameter, identifying starburst galaxies with short gas depletion times, with a secondary dependence on density, and weakly depending on gas metallicity. The galaxies are significantly enriched and dense, providing further support to the starburst scenario with rapid enrichment of the interstellar medium.
