The chemical enrichment in the early Universe as probed by JWST via direct metallicity measurements at z ∼ 8

Mirko Curti et al.

Summary: We analyze the chemical properties of three z similar to 8 galaxies behind the galaxy cluster SMACSJ0723.3-7327 and measure their metallicities using the direct T-e method for the first time at such high redshift. The galaxies show different excitation properties compared to local strong-line metallicity calibrations, suggesting a need for reassessment of the calibrations at these redshifts. The two galaxies at z similar to 7.6 have metallicities consistent with the extrapolation of the mass-metallicity relation, while the least massive galaxy at z similar to 8.5 shows a significantly lower metallicity, indicating a deviation from the equilibrium between gas flows, star formation, and metal enrichment.

NIHAO-LG: the uniqueness of Local Group dwarf galaxies

Nikhil Arora et al.

Summary: Recent studies of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group have revealed their unique characteristics in star formation history, stellar metallicity, gas content, and kinematics. Simulation results show that Local Group dwarf galaxies have similar total gas mass and stellar properties compared to field galaxies. However, they have more cold gas in their central parts and more metal-rich gas in the halo, likely due to interactions with other dwarfs in the high-density environment of the Local Group. Metal diffusion does not significantly impact the chemical evolution of Local Group dwarf galaxies. These findings highlight the importance of studying the stellar components of Local Group dwarfs for understanding galaxy formation.

LYRA - II. Cosmological dwarf galaxy formation with inhomogeneous Population III enrichment

Thales A. Gutcke et al.

Summary: In this study, we simulated a cosmological dwarf galaxy using a high-resolution model and considered the effects of supernova feedback and inhomogeneous chemical enrichment from Population III stars. By comparing the simulation results with constraints from Local Group dwarf galaxies, we found that the model can reproduce the mass, size, kinematics, and metallicity relations of dwarf galaxies.

A First Look at the Abundance Pattern-O/H, C/O, and Ne/O-in z > 7 Galaxies with JWST/NIRSpec

Karla Z. Arellano-Cordova et al.

Summary: We analyze the rest-frame near-UV and optical nebular spectra of three z > 7 galaxies from the Early Release Observations taken with the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We determine the nebular conditions and abundances for O/H, C/O, and Ne/O and find that they are generally consistent with other recent analyses. We also explore the mass-metallicity relationship and its redshift evolution, as well as detect the most distant C/O abundance and measure the first Ne/O abundances at z > 7. Moreover, we demonstrate the importance of properly flux-calibrated and higher-S/N spectra in determining the abundance pattern in z > 7 galaxies with NIRSpec/JWST.

LYRA - I. Simulating the multiphase ISM of a dwarf galaxy with variable energy supernovae from individual stars

Thales A. Gutcke et al.

Summary: The LYRA project introduces a high-resolution galaxy formation model that can be used in cosmological simulations to study stellar formation and supernova feedback mechanisms. It demonstrates the significant role of clustered supernovae in enhancing feedback effectiveness in low-density material. The model's ability to directly respond to stellar evolution and spatially distributed energy deposition has implications for galactic mass and metal retention.

The Critical Dark Matter Halo Mass for Population III Star Formation: Dependence on Lyman-Werner Radiation, Baryon-dark Matter Streaming Velocity, and Redshift

Mihir Kulkarni et al.

Summary: This study constrains the critical dark matter halo mass (M (crit)) for Population III stars as a function of various factors using cosmological simulations, providing a useful fit for semi-analytical models of early galaxy formation. The results show that the Lyman-Werner flux, baryon-dark matter streaming, redshift, and their combined effects have different impacts on M (crit).

Star Formation Histories from Spectral Energy Distributions and Color-magnitude Diagrams Agree: Evidence for Synchronized Star Formation in Local Volume Dwarf Galaxies over the Past 3 Gyr

Charlotte Olsen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that after a period of quiescence, dwarf galaxies have experienced a rejuvenated star formation period that remains active until the present day. There is potential for synchronized star formation quiescence and rejuvenation in the Local Volume, motivating further study in this area. Additionally, a hybrid method of SFH reconstruction combining CMDs and SEDs may provide more comprehensive results.
