The Radial Evolution of the Solar Wind as Organized by Electron Distribution Parameters

J. S. Halekas et al.

Summary: We used observations from the Parker Solar Probe to study the radial evolution of solar wind in the inner heliosphere. Our analysis showed that the electron temperature and electric potential are negatively correlated with wind speed, indicating that the electron thermal pressure and electric field accelerate the slow wind more than the fast wind. Furthermore, we found that both electric field driven exospheric models and thermally driven hydrodynamic models can explain the observed speed of the slowest solar wind streams, but additional acceleration mechanisms are required to explain the faster streams.
