High-contrast Imaging with Fizeau Interferometry: the Case of Altair*

E. Spalding et al.

Summary: This work presents the results of observing the nearby star Altair using the Fizeau interferometric mode of the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). The observation utilizes a correcting mirror with active phase control to improve sensitivity. Although the integration time is limited due to the instability of the Fizeau point-spread function (PSF), high sensitivity is achieved in the Fizeau fringe regime, allowing constraints to be placed on companions of Altair.

Three-dimensional imaging of convective cells in the photosphere of Betelgeuse☆

A. Lopez Ariste et al.

Summary: This study uses spectropolarimetry to obtain the first 3D images of the photosphere of Betelgeuse and discovers the presence of forces that allow plasma to reach velocities close to the escape velocity. These mechanisms may be responsible for triggering mass loss and sustaining the observed large stellar winds.

KIC 3440495: A Rapidly Rotating δ Scuti-γ Doradus Hybrid Pulsator in a Binary System

Shuguo Ma et al.

Summary: In this paper, the pulsation properties of KIC 3440495 were studied using Kepler and TESS data. The analysis revealed multiple pulsation modes and rotational frequencies associated with starspots. The large frequency separation was used to estimate the stellar parameters, and the star was identified as a potential sister of Altair. It was also suggested that KIC 3440495 is a fast rotating pulsator in a binary system.

Oscillations of 2D ESTER models I. The adiabatic case

D. R. Reese et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that acoustic modes in rapidly rotating stars follow an asymptotic formula, with avoided crossings potentially allowing for the application of inverse theory to probe the rotation profile. Furthermore, acoustic glitch theory can help interpret pulsation spectra in stars, while also predicting glitch frequency patterns related to discontinuities or ionisation zones.

Solar inertial modes: Observations, identification, and diagnostic promise

Laurent Gizon et al.

Summary: The study reports observations of the Sun's toroidal modes, with comparisons made to normal modes of a differentially rotating spherical shell to identify high-latitude inertial modes, critical-latitude inertial modes, and equatorial Rossby modes. The high-latitude and critical-latitude modes exhibit maximum kinetic energy density at the base of the convection zone, with the high-latitude modes being baroclinically unstable due to the latitudinal entropy gradient.

Seismology of Altair with MOST

Cecile Le Dizes et al.

Summary: This study confirms the presence of delta-Scuti oscillations in Altair's light curves and identifies 15 detected eigenmodes in its spectrum. The research also reveals noticeable amplitude variations in Altair's modal oscillations on a timescale of 10-15 days, potentially indicating a coupling between oscillations and thermal convection in the star's layer.
