From Secondary Traumatic Stress to Vicarious Posttraumatic Growth Amid COVID-19 Lockdown in Greece: The Role of Health Care Workers' Coping Strategies

Argyroula Kalaitzaki et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations among secondary traumatic stress (STS), vicarious posttraumatic growth (VPTG), and coping strategies among Greek health care workers during the COVID-19 lockdown. The results showed that HCWs reported moderate to low levels of STS and VPTG, with coping strategies, both adaptive and maladaptive, predicting VPTG. Adaptive coping partially mediated the relationship between STS and VPTG, while maladaptive coping fully mediated this relationship. Stakeholders could use these findings to protect HCWs and promote their posttraumatic growth.

Summary: Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity or trauma, shaped by both neurobiological and cultural processes. Neurobiological contributions include genes, epigenetics, stress-response systems, while culture helps elucidate accepted adaptations. Resilience can be enhanced through evidence-based interventions and deliberate practice, influenced by developmental experiences, culture, and practical training.
