Acute vs. chronic vs. intermittent hypoxia in breast Cancer: a review on its application in in vitro research

Qiuyu Liu et al.

Summary: Hypoxia is closely linked to therapeutic resistance in breast cancer and can induce an aggressive phenotype conducive to invasion and metastasis. However, there is currently no consensus on the duration of hypoxia and the presence of hypoxia-reoxygenation cycles. This review discusses current methods of hypoxia research, proposes a clear definition of acute, chronic, and intermittent hypoxia, and provides a foundation for in vitro (breast) cancer research related to hypoxia.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

The tumor suppressor role of salvador family WW domain-containing protein 1 (SAV1): one of the key pieces of the tumor puzzle

Isis Salviano Soares de Amorim et al.

Summary: SAV1 plays an important role as a tumor suppressor in various types of cancer, highlighting its significance along with the Hippo pathway in cancer. Its expression regulation is likely mediated by microRNAs, and downregulation is associated with cancer progression and poor prognosis.

Pancancer survival analysis of cancer hallmark genes

Adam Nagy et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the prognostic effect of cancer hallmark genes in multiple distinct cancer types. The results showed significant heterogeneity and tissue specificity in the correlation between these genes and survival, providing valuable information for future targeted therapy development in solid tumors.
