Clinical outcomes of preterm infants while using automated controllers during standard care: comparison of cohorts with different automated titration strategies

Hylke H. Salverda et al.

Summary: This retrospective study compared the outcomes of preterm infants treated with two different automated oxygen controllers. It was found that using the OxyGenie controller resulted in fewer complications, fewer patients needing treatment for ROP, and shorter duration of respiratory support.

Comparison of two devices for automated oxygen control in preterm infants: a randomised crossover trial

Hylke H. Salverda et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of two different automated oxygen control devices on target range (TR) time and occurrence of hypoxaemic and hyperoxaemic episodes. The OxyGenie control algorithm was found to be more effective in maintaining oxygen saturation within the target range and preventing hyperoxaemia.

Comparing Descriptive Statistics for Retrospective Studies From One-per-Minute and One-per-Second Data

Hylke H. Salverda et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using one-per-minute data for descriptive statistics. The results showed that there was little difference between descriptive statistics calculated from one-per-minute data compared to one-per-second data, indicating that one-per-minute data can be used for retrospective analyses.

Automated oxygen control in preterm infants, how does it work and what to expect: a narrative review

Hylke H. Salverda et al.

Summary: This article provides guidance to clinicians on understanding automated oxygen control systems with different algorithms in contemporary ventilators for preterm infants. The review found that all algorithms show beneficial effects in maintaining oxygen saturation within the target range, reducing hyperoxia and severe hypoxia. While automated oxygen control may lessen workload for bedside staff, there is concern that it could mask clinical deterioration.

Automation of oxygen titration in preterm infants: Current evidence and future challenges

Peter A. Dargaville et al.

Summary: There are six control algorithms available for automated oxygen delivery in commercially-available respiratory support devices. Short-term studies have shown advantages of automated control over manual titration, but no clear improvement in clinical outcomes for preterm infants has been observed. Further research is needed, including randomized controlled trials and better understanding of algorithm performance and adaptation.
