Mechanistic understanding of the toxic effects of arsenic and warfare arsenicals on human health and environment

Suhail Muzaffar et al.

Summary: Over 200 million people worldwide are exposed to unsafe levels of arsenic, leading to various human disorders. Synthetic organoarsenicals, including chemical warfare agents, continue to pose a threat to human health and the environment. Understanding the toxicity mechanisms of arsenic is crucial for developing effective interventions.

The freshwater water flea Daphnia magna NIES strain genome as a resource for CRISPR/Cas9 gene targeting: The glutathione S-transferase omega 2 gene

Eunjin Byeon et al.

Summary: In this study, the genome of the water flea Daphnia magna NIES strain was assembled using Oxford nanopore sequencing tool, and gene targeting was successfully demonstrated using CRISPR/Cas9 technology with the glutathione S-transferase omega 2 (GST-O2) gene as an example. Mutant lines were efficiently created and compared to wild type for their response to arsenic exposure. This research contributes to the future construction of deletion mutants in D. magna for further study of gene functions related to pollutant resistance.

Proposed mechanism for monomethylarsonate reductase activity of human omega-class glutathione transferase GSTO1-1

Aaron J. Oakley

Summary: The study investigated the role of human omega-class glutathione transferases in arsenic elimination, revealing putative mono-methylarsonate binding sites through molecular dynamics simulations and proposing a reaction mechanism based on biochemical data. Insights were further gained through comparison with homologs from various animal species.

Daphnia as a versatile model system in ecology and evolution

Dieter Ebert

Summary: Water fleas of the genus Daphnia are extensively studied ecological model organisms with a cyclic parthenogenetic life-cycle, which allows researchers to separate genetic effects from non-genetic effects. They are used in various areas of research, such as ecotoxicology, host-parasite interactions, phenotypic plasticity, and evolutionary genomics.

Combined exposure to microplastics and zinc produces sex-specific responses in the water flea Daphnia magna

Yoseop Lee et al.

Summary: The study revealed potential synergistic effects between microplastics and zinc, resulting in gender-specific impacts on Daphnia magna, with males showing greater sensitivity than females. Additionally, microplastics were found to act as vectors for metals in the aquatic environment, leading to increased toxicity.
