Identification of pigment genes (melanin, carotenoid and pteridine) associated with skin color variant in red tilapia using transcriptome analysis

Wenyu Fang et al.

Summary: The study compared the transcriptomes of different phenotypes of red tilapia, identifying key genes that control pigment synthesis and deposition, as well as pigment cell distribution. Black red tilapia had higher expression of genes related to melanin synthesis, while pink red tilapia had elevated expression levels of genes related to carotenoid transport and deposition.

Transcriptome analysis based on dietary beta-carotene supplement reveals genes potentially involved in carotenoid metabolism in Crassostrea gigas

Sai Wan et al.

Summary: Carotenoids are essential micronutrients for oysters and other animals, and the molecular mechanisms and related genes involved in carotenoid processing are still limited. In this study, a comparative transcriptome analysis of Pacific oysters was performed, revealing differentially expressed genes related to carotenoid transport, storage, cleavage, and retinoid homeostasis. Down-regulation of apoli-poprotein genes significantly decreased the carotenoid level in the oyster's digestive gland, suggesting their role in carotenoid transport and storage. These findings provide insights into the molecular basis of carotenoid metabolism and functions of carotenoid-related genes in oysters.

Comparative transcriptome analysis of the molecular mechanism underlying the golden red colour in mutant Taiwanese loach

Zhihui Huang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the mutant golden-red albinism in Taiwanese loach and identified the key role of melanogenesis pathway in pigmentation synthesis, as well as the correlation between lipid metabolism and skin transcriptome of mutant fish. This is the first report in China of Taiwanese loach with golden-red skin color, providing a basis for future genetic selection and breeding.

Molecular Mechanism Involved in Carotenoid Metabolism in Post-Smolt Atlantic Salmon: Astaxanthin Metabolism During Flesh Pigmentation and Its Antioxidant Properties

Jerome Schmeisser et al.

Summary: The transcriptomic analysis revealed that pyloric caeca in post-smolt Atlantic salmon is more sensitive to dietary astaxanthin supplementation compared to hepatic and muscular tissues. Key genes sensitive to astaxanthin supplementation were identified in pylorus, liver, and muscle. The modulation of genes in pylorus was related to absorption and metabolism of astaxanthin, while liver showed a potential link to the ferroptosis process. Dietary astaxanthin had a lesser impact on muscle except for genes related to actin remodelling and glucose homeostasis.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
