The effect of photoperiod manipulation on Atlantic salmon growth, smoltification and sexual maturation: A case study of a commercial RAS

Enrique Pino Martinez et al.

Summary: The study found that manipulation of photoperiod affected the growth, smoltification, and maturation of Atlantic salmon. The WS treatment showed better smoltification performance, but the salmon may not yet be ready for seawater.

Sexual maturation in Atlantic salmon male parr may be triggered both in late summer and early spring under standard farming conditions

Elia Ciani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the timing of sexual maturation in male Atlantic salmon, showing that some individuals matured in spring at one year of age, while others initiated maturation in autumn at six months old, earlier than previously reported. Different patterns of hormone levels and gene expression were observed between one-year old maturing males and under-yearling maturing males, highlighting the plasticity of Atlantic salmon puberty.
