Discharge effectiveness of thermal energy storage systems

Fernando A. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: This study investigates the discharge cycle of a thermal energy system using air as heat transfer fluid and a packed bed of rocks as storage medium. The results show that increasing mass flow rates and porosity improve the effectiveness of the discharge, while reducing permeability improves temperature stratification and efficiency. The thermal conductivity ratio affects outlet temperatures, and the thermal capacity ratio has different effects on the charging and discharge cycles.

Experimental study and analytical modeling on the thermocline hot water storage tank with radial plate-type diffuser

Can Xu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally and theoretically investigates a TCST with a radial plate-type diffuser. The accuracy of the model is improved by developing a modified 1D analytical model and comparing it with experimental data. The enhancement in the thermal diffusion of the thermocline is quantified by defining the correction coefficient 8, and a quantitative relationship between 8 and the tank Reynolds number is obtained. An algebraic relationship for the variation in the thermocline thickness with time is established using 8 and the thickness of the initial thermocline.

Numerical study on the thermodynamic performance of a packed bed cryogenic energy storage system

Hongbo Tan et al.

Summary: A study was conducted to investigate the thermodynamic characteristics of a solid PBCES system with cryogenic nitrogen as the working medium using a developed three-dimensional transient porous media packed bed model. The system performance was found to be predominantly affected by the complete charging criterion and superficial mass flow rate, with ls and lEx significantly increasing with an increase in the complete charging indicator. Basalt was recommended as the optimal packing material for cryogenic storage performance.

Experimental investigations on the design of a dual-media thermal energy storage with liquid metal

Franziska Mueller-Trefzer et al.

Summary: Liquid metals have the potential to be an effective heat transfer fluid in high temperature environments due to their stability and high thermal conductivity. The concept of thermocline energy storage with liquid metal as a heat transfer fluid and filler material has been validated through laboratory experiments. While there are currently only numerical investigations, thermocline energy storage using liquid metal shows promising prospects.

Usman Mehmood

Summary: This study investigates the impacts of nonrenewable and renewable energy and other socioeconomic factors on CO2 emissions in South Asian countries. The long-run association shows that economic growth in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka is not sustainable, while Nepal is achieving economic growth with reducing CO2 emissions. Institutional quality plays an important role in achieving cleaner production in India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, while population growth is lowering CO2 emissions in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Renewable energy is helping to lower environmental pollution in India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.
