Long life elastocaloric regenerator operating under compression

Lucia Ianniciello et al.

Summary: Elastocaloric cooling is a potentially more efficient and environmentally friendly refrigeration technique compared to conventional methods. However, the main challenge lies in the lifetime of the devices, which can be improved by activating them through compression and optimizing the flow system. This study shows promising results in achieving a maximum temperature span and cooling power with a high cycle endurance under compressive cycling.

Enhancing cooling performance of NiTi elastocaloric tube refrigerant via internal grooving

Jiongjiong Zhang et al.

Summary: Developing novel heat transfer surface structures on NiTi shape memory alloy tubes has been shown to improve elastocaloric cooling performance. This study designed and fabricated an internally grooved superelastic NiTi tube and optimized the geometric parameters of the grooves. By using a buckling prevention frame, the grooved NiTi tube showed significantly enhanced cooling power and fatigue life in a compressive regenerative elastocaloric cooling prototype.

High-performance cooling and heat pumping based on fatigue-resistant elastocaloric effect in compression

Ziga Ahcin et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a new design for an elastocaloric regenerator that can operate in both cooling and heat-pumping modes with durable operation and high performance. This design achieves a maximum temperature span of 31.3 K in the heat-pumping mode or a maximum heating/cooling power of more than 60 W/KG at a temperature span of 10 K.

High-entropy polymer produces a giant electrocaloric effect at low fields

Xiaoshi Qian et al.

Summary: A new class of EC polymer has been developed, showing significantly enhanced performance under lower electric fields compared to state-of-the-art materials. This improvement is achieved by increasing the number of polar entities in the polymer through the conversion of a small number of chlorofluoroethylene groups into covalent double bonds. The polymer displays high-entropy polar phases with low energy barrier for electric-field-induced switching, maintaining performance for over one million cycles at low fields suitable for practical EC cooling applications.
