Analysis on capability of power recovery of marine diesel engine at high backpressure conditions

Zetai Ma et al.

Summary: This article aims to understand the mechanism of the influence of exhaust backpressure on turbocharged engine performance and to develop evaluation and optimization methods based on the available energy of the exhaust gas. Numerical simulations were conducted on a V-type turbocharged diesel engine, and the results showed that the backpressure has an impact on the engine and turbocharger performance, constrained by factors such as maximum cylinder pressure, exhaust temperature, and turbocharger efficiency. Based on these findings, a universal evaluation method and a capability region of engine power recovery were proposed.

Effects on the transient energy distribution of turbocharging mode switching for marine diesel engines

Ling Leng et al.

Summary: In this study, a two-stage sequential turbocharging system is proposed to increase the power density and broaden the efficient working range of diesel engines. The relationships of energy migration and distribution during turbocharging mode switching are investigated, and the optimal control strategy for the switching valves is obtained. The experimental results demonstrate that the optimized valve control strategy enables efficient utilization of exhaust energy and smooth switching between turbocharging modes.

Study on turbocompound system for a heavy-duty diesel engine by combining matching analysis with experiments

Yin Yong et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of turbocompound system matching on engine performance were investigated to improve the fuel economy of long-haul commercial vehicles. The results showed that the exhaust energy distribution between the turbocharger turbine and power turbine significantly impacted engine performance, with the size of the turbocharger turbine having a more noticeable effect than the power turbine.

Review of thermoelectric generation for internal combustion engine waste heat recovery

Nicolae Vlad Burnete et al.

Summary: With the growing emphasis on electrified vehicles, the use of internal combustion engines (ICEs) as the primary propulsion source is being challenged, necessitating improvements in efficiency and emissions. Recovering waste heat from the ICE can enhance overall thermal efficiency, and thermoelectric generators offer advantages such as environmental friendliness, reliability, and direct conversion of thermal energy into electrical energy. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the use of thermoelectric generators for waste heat recovery in ICEs, presenting experimental and simulation results on power output, efficiency gains, and fuel consumption reduction. It also summarizes the design considerations for the hot side heat exchanger.
