Comparisons of blade tip phantom cooling effectiveness for two tip structures with three tip clearances

Feng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phantom cooling effects on the blade tip region of a gas turbine, showing that the flat tip performs better in phantom cooling compared to the squealer tip. Increasing the tip clearance weakens phantom cooling effectiveness on the flat tip forepart but enhances it on the rear part. Conversely, the phantom cooling effectiveness values decrease as the tip clearance increases for the squealer tip.

Non-axisymmetric endwall contour optimization and performance assessment as affected by simulated swirl purge flow and backward hole injection

Kaiyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: A shape optimization system using the kriging model, NSGA-II algorithm, and CFD simulation was constructed to balance endwall cooling and blade phantom cooling performances. Two optimal contours were found to significantly increase endwall adiabatic effectiveness, but the flat endwall achieved the best phantom cooling performance. Both design and off-design conditions showed that the contours increased slot coolant coverage on the pressure side endwall and weakened the tendency for hole coolant to cover the suction side hot ring.

Thermal-hydraulic performance of additively manufactured lattices for gas turbine blade trailing edge cooling

Inderjot Kaur et al.

Summary: Gas turbine blade trailing edge cooling is a challenging task due to strict geometrical constraints and thermal stresses. Traditional pin-fin structures are commonly used for internal cooling, but lattice structures have shown better heat transfer performance. In this study, four different lattice unit cell topologies were additively manufactured in 420 Stainless Steel using Binder Jetting technology, and their heat transfer capabilities were evaluated.

Experimental investigation of effusion and transpiration air cooling for single turbine blade

Mingeon Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of effusion and transpiration cooling for turbine blades, with experiments conducted in a high-temperature wind tunnel. The research found that transpiration cooling achieved 34% and 25% higher cooling effectiveness compared to effusion and internal cooling respectively.

Numerical study of effusion cooling of a gas turbine combustor liner

Jin Wang et al.

Summary: Effusion cooling is an effective method for cooling high-temperature components in gas turbines, with the inclination angle of cooling holes impacting cooling effectiveness. Numerical simulations showed that a 30° inclination angle provided the best cooling effect, reducing maximum temperature by 31.7%. Uniform outlet temperature distribution is crucial for turbine blade protection, with a 30% inclination angle resulting in the most uniform temperature distribution.
