Effects of filler composition, loading, and geometry on the dielectric loss, partial discharge, and dielectric strength of liquid metal polymer composites

Robert E. Calabrese et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dielectric breakdown characteristics of liquid metal polymer composites (LMPCs) containing galinstan, barium titanate, iron, and mixtures thereof. The study reveals that LMPCs with higher overall filler concentration exhibit higher dielectric loss, lower partial discharge inception electric field, and lower breakdown electric field. Additionally, the type of filler also influences the dielectric properties even with equal filler concentration, due to differences in filler conductivity, permittivity, and geometry that affect the electric field distribution within the composites.

Metallophobic Coatings to Enable Shape Reconfigurable Liquid Metal Inside 3D Printed Plastics

Jinwoo Ma et al.

Summary: Liquid metals can adhere to most surfaces due to the presence of a native gallium oxide layer, but a coating made of suspended silica particles in an appropriate solvent can prevent adhesion on various 3D printed plastics and commercial polymers. This technique allows for the creation of a transparent, nanoscopically rough coating that enables liquid metals to roll and bounce off treated surfaces, and can be selectively removed by laser ablation for metal patterning.
