Electrophoretic deposition, microstructure and properties of multicomponent sodium alginate-based coatings incorporated with graphite oxide and hydroxyapatite on titanium biomaterial substrates

Tomasz Moskalewicz et al.

Summary: The multicomponent coatings based on sodium alginate with HA nanoparticles and GtO nanosheets showed enhanced adhesion and corrosion resistance on titanium substrates. The surface characteristics of the coatings were influenced by the roughness of the substrates. The newly developed coatings have potential for further development of biologically enhanced titanium surfaces.

The grain-refinement mechanism during heavy cold-rolling of commercial-purity titanium

S. Mironov et al.

Summary: The microstructure evolution in heavily-cold-rolled commercial-purity titanium is controlled by a continuous-dynamic-recrystallization mechanism, with mechanical twinning playing a crucial role in increasing flow stress and enhancing the development of dislocation boundaries, leading to the formation of ultrafine-grain structure at relatively low strains achievable by conventional flat rolling.

Summary: This study provides insights into the effects of nanostructure and crystallographic texture on Ti corrosion resistance under simulated inflammatory conditions. The development of a basal texture component was found to provide the most advantageous corrosion properties for prolonged immersion in a simulated inflammatory environment.

Effect of temperature on thermal oxidation behavior of biomedical Ti-Zr-Mo alloys

D. R. N. Correa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of temperature on various properties of Ti-15Zr-xMo alloys, including morphology, crystal structure, chemical composition, roughness, wettability, microhardness, and corrosion resistance. The results showed that optimizing the thermal oxidation treatment at specific temperatures and chemical compositions could lead to alloys with favorable surface properties, which could broaden their biomedical applications.

Albumin and fibronectin adsorption on treated titanium surfaces for osseointegration: An advanced investigation

J. Barberi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between different surface properties and protein adsorption on titanium-based materials. The results show that surface roughness and topography play a major role in protein adsorption, while the effects of surface energy and wettability are overcome. The secondary structure and orientation of proteins are determined by the exposed hydroxyl groups and surface zeta potential.

Cryoforged nanotwinned titanium with ultrahigh strength and ductility

Shiteng Zhao et al.

Summary: Nanostructured metals are usually strong due to high internal boundary density, limiting dislocation mean free path, but also more brittle. Nanotwinned materials can overcome this trade-off. A new nanostructuring method enhances the strength and ductility of titanium.

Corrosion behavior of titanium modified by direct laser interference lithography

Donata Kuczynska-Zemla et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the corrosion behavior of Titanium Grade 2 after non-contact laser functionalization using Direct Laser Interference Lithography (DLIL). The results show that laser-textured surfaces improve titanium corrosion resistance in physiological saline, with a more stable passive layer. The enhanced corrosion resistance in DLIL samples is mainly attributed to changes in surface topography, chemical composition, and oxide film thickness.
