Topological Magnets: Functions Based on Berry Phase and Multipoles

Satoru Nakatsuji et al.

Summary: Macroscopic responses of magnets are often governed by magnetization and are limited to ferromagnets. However, newly developed topological magnets show exceptionally large responses. Taking antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals as an example, we highlight two key factors: enhanced Berry curvature due to nontrivial band topology in momentum space, and cluster magnetic multipoles in real space. These properties enable large macroscopic responses, including the anomalous Hall effect and Nernst effect, magneto-optical effect, and magnetic spin Hall effect in antiferromagnets with negligible magnetization.

Observation of domain structure in non-collinear antiferromagnetic Mn3Sn thin films by magneto-optical Kerr effect

Tomohiro Uchimura et al.

Summary: In this study, hysteresis-loop measurement and domain imaging were performed on (1 (1) over bar 00)-oriented D0(19)-Mn3+xSn1-x (-0.11 <= x <= 0.14) thin films using the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE), and the results were compared with the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) measurement. The x dependence of AHE and MOKE showed a similar trend, indicating the same origin. Furthermore, the reversal process of the chiral-spin structure in non-collinear antiferromagnetic thin films was found to start with nucleation of sub-micrometer-scale domains and preferentially propagate along the [11(2) over bar 0] direction.

Effect of residual strain on magnetic properties and Hall effect in chiral antiferromagnet Mn3Sn

J. J. Deng et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of residual strain (RS) generated by uniaxial stress on the magnetic properties and Hall effect of polycrystalline Mn3Sn was investigated. The results suggest that RS is beneficial for suppressing the magnetic transition from an inverse triangular antiferromagnetic (AFM) state to a helical AFM state. Furthermore, the topological Hall effect (THE) was observed in Mn3Sn over the entire temperature range from 5 K to 400 K due to RS. It is speculated that the THE originates from a RS-induced non-coplanar AFM structure. These findings provide a path for the construction of topological antiferromagnets through strain engineering.

Perpendicular full switching of chiral antiferromagnetic order by current

Tomoya Higo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the perpendicular and full spin-orbit torque switching of an antiferromagnetic binary state. The researchers use the chiral antiferromagnet Mn3Sn and fabricate heavy-metal/Mn3Sn heterostructures by molecular beam epitaxy. The experimental results show that the perpendicular octupole polarization in a 30-nanometre-thick Mn3Sn film can achieve 100% switching with a critical current density of less than 15 megaamperes per square centimetre. The study reveals the significance of the perpendicular geometry between the current-induced spin accumulation and the octupole polarization for spin-orbit torque efficiency.

Domain structure and domain wall dynamics in topological chiral antiferromagnets from the viewpoint of magnetic octupole

YoshiChika Otani et al.

Summary: This article focuses on domain structures, domain wall dynamics based on a cluster magnetic octupole in topological antiferromagnets. Many unresolved issues remain regarding magnetic octupole domains and domain walls. The current status of research on antiferromagnetic domains and walls is discussed, alongside approaches to detecting and manipulating MODs and walls.

Anomalous transport due to Weyl fermions in the chiral antiferromagnets Mn3X, X=Sn, Ge

Taishi Chen et al.

Summary: The recent discoveries of large zero-field Hall and Nernst effects in antiferromagnets Mn3X (X=Sn, Ge) are considered fingerprints of magnetic Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, highlighting the importance of magnetic topological states in condensed matter research. This review combines previous reports with new transport measurements on high-quality Mn3Sn and Mn3Ge single crystals, identifying magnetotransport signatures specific to chiral anomalies and planar Hall effect, suggesting the essential role of magnetic Weyl fermions in producing large transverse responses in the absence of magnetization.

Tunable topological Hall effects in noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn/Pt bilayers

Yang Cheng et al.

Summary: The study reports the observation of high-temperature topological Hall signal in Mn3Sn/Pt bilayers, likely attributed to the stabilization of topological spin textures enabled by the strong spin-orbit coupling of the Pt overlayer and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction at the Mn3Sn/Pt interface.

Correlation of anomalous Hall effect with structural parameters and magnetic ordering in Mn3+xSn1-x thin films

Ju-Young Yoon et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between structural parameters, magnetic ordering, and the anomalous Hall effect in Mn3+xSn1-x thin films annealed at different temperatures. The formation of epitaxial single-phase D0(19)-Mn3+xSn1-x was found to lead to a larger anomalous Hall effect when the lattice constant is closer to that of the bulk material. The temperature dependence of the AHE varied with the annealing temperature, suggesting a possible correlation between AHE and Fermi level position with respect to Weyl points.

Observation of spontaneous x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in a chiral antiferromagnet

Shoya Sakamoto et al.

Summary: In this paper, spontaneous XMCD spectra originating from the inverse triangular spin structure or the polarization of the cluster magnetic octupole were observed in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn3Sn thin film, which is consistent with recent theoretical predictions. This suggests that the inverse triangular spin structure can give rise to finite XMCD signals in the absence of net magnetization.
