Resolving regions known for intense wave-current interaction using spectral wave models: A case study in the energetic flow fields of Northern Norway

Trygve Halsne et al.

Summary: Oceanic current forcing has a significant impact on wave heights in Northern Norway, especially in regions with dangerous sea states. Including current forcing in wave models can significantly improve predictions and better match in situ observations, particularly in areas with strong tidal currents.

Assessment of inhomogeneity in environmental conditions in a Norwegian fjord for design of floating bridges

Zhengshun Cheng et al.

Summary: This study assesses long-term spatial inhomogeneity in wind and wave parameters in a Norwegian fjord for the design of floating bridges. Significant wave height and peak period are closer in the south and decrease towards the north, while mean wind speed has smaller variation in the south and greater variation in the north. Correlation analysis shows that wind parameters are less correlated than wave parameters along a potential bridge route.

Effect of wave inhomogeneity on fatigue damage of mooring lines of a side-anchored floating bridge

Jian Dai et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the responses of mooring lines for a 4.6 km long fjord crossing floating bridge under inhomogeneous wave conditions, and evaluates the fatigue damage in the mooring lines. The study examines the accuracy of spectral methods in comparison with conventional rainflow cycle counting algorithm, and conducts numerical studies to indicate the effect of various wave inhomogeneities on fatigue damage in the mooring lines.

Modelling wave growth in narrow fetch geometries: The white-capping and wind input formulations

Konstantinos Christakos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of three different wave model source term packages in narrow fetch geometries, with the results indicating that the saturation-based approach of SWAN performs best in fjord systems. ST6 shows the highest sensitivity to fetch geometry and local wind changes, with all packages overestimating wave energy in narrow fetch geometry without swell.

The impact of surface currents on the wave climate in narrow fjords

Konstantinos Christakos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of surface currents on wind-generated waves in a complex coastal system with narrow fjords. The results show that current forcing improves wave simulations, with wave height estimates improving by 12% at locations dominated by wind sea, and spectral characteristics and shape being enhanced with current forcing.

Effects of Wave Coherence on Longshore Variability of Nearshore Wave Processes

Reza Salatin et al.

Summary: Coherent waves are pairs of waves with the same frequency and waveform, but with constant phase difference, leading to stationary wave interference in the wave field. The presence of coherent water waves can cause longshore variations in wave parameters, affecting radiation stress and other wave characteristics.

Effect of Modelling Inhomogeneous Wave Conditions on Structural Responses of a Very Long Floating Bridge

Jian Dai et al.

Summary: This study selected a hypothetical crossing at the Sulafjord and numerically computed the wave environment in 2015 at 10 positions along the crossing to examine the effect of different modelling approaches of inhomogeneous wave conditions on the global responses of a long, straight, and side-anchored floating bridge. The analysis included establishing different inhomogeneous wave conditions based on wave data at 3, 5, and 10 positions, and conducting time-domain simulations.
