The Cenozoic Seawater Conundrum: New constraints from Mg isotopes in island dolostones

Zhongya Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Mg isotopic composition and trace elemental compositions of Cenozoic dolostones from the Xisha Islands. The results indicate the stability of Mg isotopes in seawater since the late Cenozoic, while the increase in seawater Mg/Ca ratios cannot be explained by a single mechanism. It suggests that different processes involving Mg fluxes need to be coupled to explain the observed trends in Mg content and isotopic compositions.

Geochemical fingerprints of dolomitization in Bahamian carbonates: Evidence from sulphur, calcium, magnesium and clumped isotopes

Sean T. Murray et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the Neogene dolomites in the Bahamas using chemical and isotope analysis, revealing different dolomitization mechanisms and highlighting the utility of multiple geochemical proxies in deciphering the diagenetic history of shallow-water carbonate sediments. The findings caution against simple interpretations of stratigraphic variability in these geochemical proxies.

Sabkha dolomite as an archive for the magnesium isotope composition of seawater

Netta Shalev et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that dolomite could potentially be used as an archive for studying ancient seawater Mg isotope values, but uncertainties remain around the factors influencing dolomite Mg isotopes. Research in a rare environment in Qatar suggests that pore water involved in dolomite formation may have higher delta Mg-26 values than seawater.

Reconstructing Neoproterozoic seawater chemistry from early diagenetic dolomite

Peter W. Crockford et al.

Summary: The study investigates the pairing of calcium and magnesium isotopes to understand environmental information in late Tonian dolostones. By analyzing late Tonian dolostones in northwestern Canada, the researchers suggest that Tonian seawater may have had a low 87Li value and similar delta C-13 values to modern seawater. This indicates that factors other than global seawater chemistry shifts may be responsible for isotopic variations.

Summary: The study found that the compositions of silicon, oxygen, and strontium isotopes in chert from the Ordovician reservoir can help constrain the source and migration of Si-rich fluids, preventing storage performance decline and drilling failure.
