Technetium-99 decontamination from radioactive wastewater by modified bentonite: batch, column experiment and mechanism investigation

Junqiang Yang et al.

Summary: Technetium-99, a high-yield fission product, is a significant threat due to its radiotoxicity and high solubility in the environment. The study introduced a low-cost adsorbent, HDPy-bent, which showed excellent adsorption ability for ReO4, an analogue for TcO4, across a range of pH levels, demonstrating potential for efficient removal of 99Tc from contaminated water.

Application of electrical rock typing for quantification of pore network geometry and cementation factor assessment

Parvin Kolah-Kaj et al.

Summary: Rock typing, specifically electrical rock typing, reduces time and cost for petrophysical analysis. The study shows that Kozeny's factor is correlated with effective cross-sectional area and electrical tortuosity. Flowing porosity and rock capacity for transmitting electricity are directly related, as well as cementation factor and stagnant porosity.

A modified Kozeny-Carman equation for predicting saturated hydraulic conductivity of compacted bentonite in confined condition

Kunlin Ruan et al.

Summary: The Kozeny-Carman (KC) equation is a well-known relation between hydraulic conductivity and pore properties in porous material. This study proposes a modified KC equation based on a new dual-pore system to improve the prediction of saturated hydraulic conductivities of bentonites. The modification replaces critical parameters in the conventional KC equation with macroporosity and tortuosity of macropore, and calculates them based on the basal spacing of compacted bentonite. Compared with conventional KC equation and prediction method based on diffuse double layer (DDL) theory, the modified KC equation shows better fitting to the experimental data of bentonites' saturated hydraulic conductivity to a certain extent.

Cesium and barium removal from aqueous solutions in the presence of humic acid and competing cations by a Greek bentonite from Kimolos Island

Fotini Noli et al.

Summary: The study investigated Cs- and Ba-sorption onto bentonite from Kimolos island in Greece, finding that sorption depended on initial concentration, ionic strength, and temperature, and was well described by Langmuir and Freundlich equations. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that the sorption of Cs- and Ba- was spontaneous and endothermic. The sorption capacity of the Kimolos bentonite for cesium and barium was reduced in the presence of humic acid and competing cations.

Prediction of cementation factor for low-permeability Iranian carbonate reservoirs using particle swarm optimization-artificial neural network model and genetic programming algorithm

Soran Mahmoodpour et al.

Summary: Cementation factor is a crucial parameter for reservoir parameter estimation, but laboratory measurements for it are costly and time-consuming. This study developed a unique model using ANN and PSO algorithms, and discovered a correlation for the cementation factor using the GP algorithm. The sensitivity analysis showed the model's ability to predict cementation factor with great precision. Comparisons with other models demonstrated the higher performance capacity of the GP algorithm and PSO-ANN model in predicting cementation exponent.

Development of a new model for prediction of cementation factor in tight gas sandstones based on electrical rock typing

Aboozar Soleymanzadeh et al.

Summary: Evaluation of tight gas sandstone (TGS) reservoirs involves significant uncertainties, particularly in estimating the cementation factor (m) as one of the main challenges. A new theoretical equation for predicting m versus porosity was developed for each electrical rock type, showing a linear trend with an intercept of one. The proposed electrical rock typing approach was validated using a large dataset, showing proper alignment with the linear equation of m versus 1.
