Plasma-Catalytic Methanol Synthesis from CO2 Hydrogenation over a Supported Cu Cluster Catalyst: Insights into the Reaction Mechanism

Zhaolun Cui et al.

Summary: Plasma-catalytic CO2 hydrogenation for methanol production was studied using a combination of experimental and computational methods. Results showed a synergistic effect between the Cu/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst and CO2/H2 plasma, with enhanced methanol selectivity achieved through the addition of H2O. Computational calculations revealed the bifunctional effect of Cu-13/gamma-Al2O3 interface sites in activating CO2 molecules and promoting hydrogenation of key intermediates. This study provides new insights into the mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation through plasma catalysis, and offers inspiration for the conversion of other small molecules using supported-metal clusters.

Insight into the synthesis of alcohols and acids in plasma-driven conversion of CO2 and CH4 over copper-based catalysts

Yuezhao Wang et al.

Summary: This study successfully controlled the distribution of oxygenates in the plasma-catalytic conversion of CO2 and CH4 by exploiting the electronic structure and acidic properties of copper-based catalysts. The Cu2+ species promoted the formation of alcohols, while Cu+ species were critical for enhancing acetic acid production. The Brunsted acid sites of HZSM-5 greatly improved the selectivity of acetic acid, and the synergy between isolated Cu+ center and Brunsted acid sites showed potential for acetic acid formation. Possible pathways for the formation of alcohols and acetic acids were also discussed.

Dry reforming of methane by microsecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge plasma: Optimizing the reactor structures

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of reactor structures on the plasma-assisted dry reforming of CH4 process and finds that a multi-stage or foil external electrode and negative polar discharge can promote the conversions of reactants and the yields of syngas. The results show that lower power input and heat insulation measures can lead to higher conversions, yields, and energy conversion efficiencies. Additionally, packing materials into the reactor can further promote the conversion of CH4, but has limited effect on the conversion of CO2.
