The Crystal Plane is not the Key Factor for CO2-to-Methane Electrosynthesis on Reconstructed Cu2O Microparticles

Bangwei Deng et al.

Summary: The Cu2O/Cu interface plays a key role in determining the selectivity of methane formation, rather than the initial crystal plane of reconstructed Cu2O microparticles. Experimental results show that methane evolution is dominated on all crystal planes with similar Tafel slopes and long-term stabilities.

Thermodynamically controlled photo-electrochemical CO2 reduction at Cu/rGO/PVP/Nafion multi-layered dark cathode for selective production of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde

Amol U. Pawar et al.

Summary: Transforming greenhouse gases like CO2 into energy rich carbon-based chemicals is efficient for environmental and energy sustainability. However, the stable and linear structure of CO2 makes it difficult to reduce. By activating CO2 through complexation with suitable activators, the kinetics and thermodynamics of the photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction reaction can be controlled, leading to selective production of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in a solar light driven process.

Coordination environment dependent selectivity of single-site-Cu enriched crystalline porous catalysts in CO2 reduction to CH4

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the ECR selectivity depends strongly on the Cu site coordination environment in crystalline porous catalysts, with Cu-DBC showing higher selectivity and activity due to the lower energy barriers of Cu-O-4 sites during the ECR process. This provides a platform for constructing highly selective ECR catalysts with potential applications in the energy conversion field.

Summary: This tutorial review explores the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O to multi-carbon (C2+) compounds, focusing on the similarities and differences in the electrocatalytic CO2 and CO reduction reactions (CO2RR and CORR) into C2+ compounds over Cu-based catalysts. It discusses fundamental aspects, reaction mechanisms, efficient catalysts, and key factors determining selectivity, activity, and stability. Opportunities, challenges, and future trends in the electrocatalytic CO2RR and CORR are also highlighted for the synthesis of C2+ olefins and oxygenates.
