Natural fibro-granular composite as a novel sustainable sound-absorbing material

Seyed Ehsan Samaei et al.

Summary: An innovative natural fibro-granular composite made of kenaf fibers and waste rice husk granules was developed and optimized for its sound absorption properties. The optimized composite demonstrated superior acoustic behavior compared to samples made of 100% kenaf or 100% rice husk. Empirical and phenomenological models were used to predict the frequency-dependent sound absorption coefficient of the optimized material, with the Johnson-Champoux-Allard model showing the best prediction performance.

Hierarchical pore structure based on cellulose nanofiber/melamine composite foam with enhanced sound absorption performance

Lu Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, cellulose nanofiber and melamine foam were combined for the first time using an environmentally friendly method to create a hierarchical pore structure with both macropores and mesopores. The enhanced multiple reflections and micro-vibration of the sound waves resulted in a significant improvement in sound absorption performance. This work is expected to inspire the design and preparation of high-performance sound absorption materials.

Wideband low-frequency sound absorption by inhomogeneous multi-layer resonators with extended necks

Jingwen Guo et al.

Summary: This study develops a structure consisting of multi-layer HRENs for wideband low-frequency sound absorption. By adding layers to the traditional HREN absorber, optimal structures are designed for effective sound absorption in a prescribed wideband frequency range, offering great potential for noise attenuation in various realistic applications while maintaining a compact size.

Microperforated Panel and deep subwavelength Archimedean-inspired spiral cavities for multi-tonal and broadband sound absorption

Marco Boccaccio et al.

Summary: A novel deep subwavelength hybrid parallel-arranged Microperforated panel (MPP) and Archimedean-inspired spiral (AIS) absorber is proposed for broadband sound absorption at low frequency. The device exhibits absorption coefficients above 60% over desired frequency ranges, with absorption peaks occurring at resonance frequencies and higher harmonics. The low frequency broadband absorption makes the device suitable for various acoustic engineering applications.

Design, fabrication and sound absorption test of composite porous metamaterial with embedding I-plates into porous polyurethane sponge

Nansha Gao et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a composite porous metamaterial (CPM) consisting of porous polyurethane sponge with embedded multi-layer I-plates to improve the sound absorption performance. By using the Johnson-Champoux-Allard (JCA) model, the sound absorption coefficient of the CPM is characterized, showing significantly improved performance compared to traditional PPS. The study also discusses the effects of geometric parameters on the average sound absorption coefficient, providing valuable insights for designing broadband and efficient sound absorbers.

A thin meta-structure with multi-order resonance for underwater broadband sound absorption in low frequency

Li Bo Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a thin meta-structure with detuned multi-order micro-perforated panels with backing cavity (MPPB) for achieving broadband underwater sound absorption at low frequency. By inserting multiple micro-perforated panels into the original backing cavity, more sound absorption peaks can be obtained at higher frequencies without significantly changing the structure's total thickness. Through precise adjustment of parameters and parallel arrangement of MPPBs, a meta-structure with high absorption coefficients at 1380-3150 Hz is achieved.

Chun-Won Kang et al.

Summary: Steam explosion at low pressure can significantly improve the sound absorption performance of wood, with different effects on different tree species, and resulting in blackening of the wood. The study suggests that steam explosion can be used to manufacture wood-based sound absorption boards.

Sound absorption characteristics of three species (binuang, balsa and paulownia) of low density hardwood

Eun-Suk Jang et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing porosity improved gas permeability and sound absorption performance of the wood. Paulownia, however, had poor sound absorption performance due to most of its vessels being blocked by tyloses. It was also observed that the sound absorption coefficient of the woods increased as the size of air cavities between specimens and tube walls increased at low frequencies.

Nansha Gao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a composite meta-porous structure to improve the sound absorption performance of porous materials, and finds that the hybrid structure with periodic boundary exhibits high sound absorption in a certain frequency range, validated through theoretical models and finite element methods. The research also shows that different boundaries have varying effects on the sound absorption performance.
