SOX9+ enthesis cells are associated with spinal ankylosis in ankylosing spondylitis

S. Jo et al.

Summary: This study identified the presence of granular tissue and cartilage in the subchondral bone of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and found co-expression of the transcription factor SOX9 and matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP13) in these tissues. SOX9 plays an important role in inflammation and promotes mineralization features in entheseal tissue. These findings emphasize the importance of SOX9 in enthesis cells.

The impact of smoking status on radiographic progression in patients with ankylosing spondylitis on anti-tumor necrosis factor treatment

Bora Nam et al.

Summary: This study investigated factors associated with radiographic progression during anti-TNF treatment, with a focus on smoking status. The results indicate that smoking is a modifiable risk factor for radiographic progression in patients with AS.

Identification of lncRNAs associated with the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis

Dan Huang et al.

Summary: This study identified several lncRNAs specifically expressed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of AS patients, indicating their potential key roles in the pathogenesis of this autoimmune disease. Specifically, NONHSAT118801.2 and NONHSAT183847.1 were found to be correlated with disease severity, suggesting their involvement in the occurrence and development of AS.

The TNF-NF-κB-DKK1 Axis Promoted Bone Formation in the Enthesis of Ankylosing Spondylitis

Sungsin Jo et al.

Summary: This study found that AS patients have higher serum DKK1 levels compared to healthy controls, and TNF treatment can promote bone formation and DKK1 expression in enthesis cells. TNF-induced NF-kappa B activation upregulates DKK1 transcription, leading to enhanced bone formation in AS patients. Overall, DKK1 expression induced by TNF may contribute to the bone formation seen in the progression of ankylosing spondylitis.
