Association between spatial neglect and impaired verticality perception after stroke: A systematic review

Elissa Embrechts et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the associations between spatial neglect (SN) and the characteristics of verticality perception, considering the time post-stroke. The findings suggest that SN is associated with misperception of the subjective visual vertical (SVV), resulting in larger SVV tilts and uncertainty.

Lateropulsion Prevalence After Stroke A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Shenhao Dai et al.

Summary: Lateropulsion, a deficit of active body orientation in stroke patients, is a significant concern in rehabilitation. This study aimed to bridge the gap in epidemiological knowledge by analyzing 22 studies. The findings revealed a high prevalence of lateropulsion, especially in individuals with infratentorial stroke, highlighting the importance of early detection and intervention.

The importance of the insular cortex for vestibular and spatial syndromes

Bernhard Baier et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify the neuroanatomical correlates and associations of neuropsychological syndromes after acute unilateral right-hemisphere brain lesions. It was found that alterations in the insular cortex are related to orientation in three-dimensional space. Though isolated lesions of the insular cortex did not induce specific neuropsychological symptoms, other brain regions are likely involved in these phenomena.

Lateropulsion After Hemispheric Stroke A Form of Spatial Neglect Involving Graviception

Shenhao Dai et al.

Summary: Lateropulsion, or pusher syndrome, is characterized by body tilt, pushing, and resistance, adjusting body orientation in the roll plane to an incorrect reference of verticality. It may represent a form of spatial neglect, supporting the idea of 3D maps in the human brain involving an internal model of verticality.

Prevalence of spatial neglect post-stroke: A systematic review

Emily Esposito et al.

Summary: The estimated prevalence of spatial neglect (SN) after unilateral stroke is around 30%, with a higher occurrence after right brain damage (RBD) compared to left brain damage (LBD). Using ecological assessments and multi-test methods to detect SN is more reliable than using a single-cutoff criterion from tests not directly related to daily function. The prevalence of SN decreases over time from acute to chronic stages post-stroke.

Summary: Lateropulsion plays a key role in poststroke balance and gait disorders, especially in patients with right hemisphere stroke. It should be systematically assessed and addressed in rehabilitation to improve outcomes.
