Chronic Active Epstein-Barr Virus Infection: The Elucidation of the Pathophysiology and the Development of Therapeutic Methods

Ayako Arai

Summary: Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection (CAEBV) is a disease characterized by the clonal proliferation of EBV-infected T or NK cells, leading to systemic inflammation and multiple organ failures. The only effective treatment currently available is allogeneic stem cell transplantation, and research on the disease is advancing.

EBV-Driven Lymphoproliferative Disorders and Lymphomas of the Gastrointestinal Tract: A Spectrum of Entities with a Common Denominator (Part 3)

Magda Zanelli et al.

Summary: The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a common virus infecting the majority of individuals early in life, but only a minority develop EBV-related diseases under conditions of immunosuppression. EBV-driven lymphoid proliferations can originate from B-cells or T/NK-cells, with behaviors ranging from indolent to aggressive, posing challenges for diagnosis and treatment.

Clinical features of NK/T-cell EBV-associated LPD manifested as gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with normal immunity: a case report and literature review

Si-Zhu Wang et al.

Summary: This case report describes a rare Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated NK/T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder (LPD) involving the gastrointestinal tract. The patient was diagnosed with extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type, after multiple colonoscopies and biopsies. The presence of multiple, multiform, and segmental gastrointestinal ulcers should raise suspicion of EBV infection, regardless of other symptoms.
