One-Pot Preparation of Highly Dispersed Second Near-Infrared J-Aggregate Nanoparticles Based on FD-1080 Cyanine Dye for Bioimaging and Biosensing

Caixia Sun et al.

Summary: Bioimaging and biosensing in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window have great potential due to their high resolution and penetration depth. However, the synthesis of hydrophilic organic contrast agents with absorbance and emission wavelengths beyond 1300 nm remains challenging. This study demonstrates the use of J-aggregation to achieve red-shifted organic dyes in the NIR-II window and improve their hydrophilicity. FD-1080 J-aggregates (FD-J) with absorbance of 1360 nm and emission of 1370 nm were successfully synthesized, enabling real-time imaging of mice brain and hindlimb vasculatures beyond 1500 nm. In addition, these aggregates were used as fluorescence sensors to detect inflammation in living mice.

Rational Design and Application of an Indolium-Derived Heptamethine Cyanine with Record-Long Second Near-Infrared Emission

Xiaoxie Ma et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel indolium-like heptamethine cyanine dye was designed and developed by installing indolium-derived polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on a conjugated polyene backbone. This dye showed bright fluorescent emission in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window and had the capability of marking blood vessels in mice. Moreover, it exhibited strong absorption bands in the NIR range and high photothermal conversion efficiency, making it suitable for tumor-targeted photothermal therapy.

Anionic Cyanine J-Type Aggregate Nanoparticles with Enhanced Photosensitization for Mitochondria-Targeting Tumor Phototherapy

Yibin Li et al.

Summary: In this study, novel anionic cyanine photosensitizers with a tricyanofuran end group were designed, and supramolecular J-type aggregates in nanoparticles were achieved through counterion engineering. The results demonstrate the significant advantages of J-type aggregate nanoparticles in photosensitization, including red-shifted emission, negatively charged surface, high photostability, and enhanced singlet oxygen generation efficiency.

H*- and J-Aggregates of an Indotricarbocyanine Dye: Steady-State Spectral Properties and Excited-State Dynamics

Nikita Belko et al.

Summary: This study investigates the steady-state spectral properties, morphology, photoelectrochemical response, and excited-state dynamics of H*-aggregates for the first time. The deactivation of electronic excitations in H*-aggregates follows two paths under 400 nm pumping, while under 800 nm pumping, they are promoted to the bottom of the exciton band. For J-aggregates, the ground-state bleaching follows biexponential decay with faster deactivation due to greater exciton delocalization.
