Dancing on Ropes - Enantioselective Functionalization of Preformed Four-Membered Carbocycles

Jun Chen et al.

Summary: Cyclobutane derivatives are important in organic synthesis and drug design. The enantioselective synthesis of cyclobutane derivatives using photochemistry has gained attention. Additionally, the enantioselective functionalization of preformed four-membered carbocycles is also an important method. This article summarizes recent advances in this field from 2012 and presents a method that combines strain energy and enhanced reactivity.

Cooperative Stereoinduction in Asymmetric Photocatalysis

Steven J. Chapman et al.

Summary: Stereoinduction in complex organic reactions often involves the interaction of multiple stereocontrol elements, with the potential for significant cooperative effects. This study presents a strategy for enantioselective photocycloaddition reactions using a tandem chiral photocatalyst/Bronsted acid approach. The matched and mismatched chiral catalyst pairs show different reaction rates and enantioselectivities, suggesting the importance of similar matched/mismatched effects in other types of enantioselective dual-catalytic photochemical reactions.

Boosting the Enantioselectivity of Conjugate Borylation of α,β-Disubstituted Cyclobutenones with Monooxides of Chiral C2 -Symmetric Bis(phosphine) Ligands

Ming Cui et al.

Summary: Chiral bis(phosphine) monooxides derived from C-2-symmetric bis(phosphines) have been found to exhibit superior enantioselection in copper-catalyzed conjugate borylation and 1,6-addition reactions. Specifically, (R,R)-Bozphos ligand shows significantly higher enantiomeric excesses and chemical yields compared to parent (R,R)-Me-Duphos ligand.

Peng Yan et al.

Summary: Cyclobutenone has been utilized as a reactive dienophile in Diels-Alder reactions, with this study presenting the first enantioselective example using chiral oxazaborolidine-aluminum bromide catalysis. Additionally, a total synthesis of (-)-kingianin F was achieved for the first time through the enantioenriched cycloadduct bicyclo[4.2.0]octane derivative.

Synthesis of Silylated Cyclobutanone and Cyclobutene Derivatives Involving 1,4-Addition of Zinc-Based Silicon Nucleophiles

Ming Cui et al.

Summary: A copper-catalyzed method for introducing a silicon group into cyclobutenone derivatives to produce beta-silylated cyclobutanones is reported. By trapping the enolate intermediate with ClP(O)(OPh)2, silylated enol phosphates are obtained and can be further utilized in Kumada cross-coupling reactions to yield silylated cyclobutene derivatives.

Enantioselective [2+2] Photocycloaddition via Iminium Ions: Catalysis by a Sensitizing Chiral Bronsted Acid

Franziska Pecho et al.

Summary: N,O-Acetals derived from alpha,beta-unsaturated beta-aryl substituted aldehydes and (1-aminocyclohexyl)methanol underwent a catalytic enantioselective [2 + 2] photocycloaddition to a variety of olefins with high yield and enantioselectivity under visible light irradiation using a chiral phosphoric acid as the catalyst. The formation of an iminium ion, the role of thioxanthone moieties, and the efficient enantioface differentiation were confirmed through NMR studies.
