Creating Dynamic Nanospaces in Solution by Cationic Cages as Multirole Catalytic Platform for Unconventional C(sp)-H Activation Beyond Enzyme Mimics

Kang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the accomplishment of multirole and multi-way cage-confined catalysis by creating dynamic nanospaces in solution using highly charged positive coordination cage of [Pd-6(RuL3)(8)](28+). The biomimetic cage effect enables versatile functions and anomalous reactivities, and the amphoteric heterogeneity generated by partial deprotonation of imidazole-NHs on cage sphere enhances cavity-basicity against solution-acidity. The synergistic actions of cage hydrophobicity, host-guest electrostatic interactions, and imidazole-N coordination facilitate various catalytic reactions and phase transfers, providing a useful catalytic protocol that combines the merits of different types of catalysis.

Moderated Basicity of Endohedral Amine Groups in an Octa-Cationic Self-Assembled Cage

Courtney Ngai et al.

Summary: A self-assembled cage structure was synthesized by controlling the self-assembly of internal amines. Despite carrying a positive charge, the structure can extract protons from water in solution. The internal amines have lower basicity compared to their counterparts in free solution. This moderation is a hallmark of enzymatic catalysis.

Twisted rectangular subunits self-assemble into a ferritin-like capsule

Jack A. Davies et al.

Summary: The vertices of polyhedral protein capsules can be composed of multiple capsule-forming protein subunits, enabling them to enclose more volume and larger cargoes than single proteins. Applying protein cage design principles to synthetic analogs can increase their volume of encapsulation. In this study, a tetrahedral metal-organic capsule was self-assembled from a simple tetramine subcomponent, with each face composed of three ligand panels. The self-assembly rules of this system are programmed into the tetramine, favoring the formation of a large capsule over a simpler cube-like structure. Unlike other large metal-organic capsules, this new capsule has an enclosed cavity and can bind large dianionic guests.

Molecular Cavity for Catalysis and Formation of Metal Nanoparticles for Use in Catalysis

Rupak Saha et al.

Summary: The employment of weak intermolecular interactions in supramolecular chemistry provides an alternative approach to create artificial chemical environments resembling the active sites of enzymes. In recent years, discrete molecular architectures with defined shapes and geometries have revolutionized the field due to their intrinsic porosity and ease of synthesis using dynamic non-covalent/covalent interactions. These supramolecular systems have demonstrated various applications and catalysis within confined nanospaces has shown significant growth. This review highlights the recent advancements in catalytic activity influenced by the nanocavities of hydrogen-bonded cages, metal-ligand coordination cages, and dynamic or reversible covalently bonded organic cages in different solvent media.

Beyond Platonic: How to Build Metal-Organic Polyhedra Capable of Binding Low-Symmetry, Information-Rich Molecular Cargoes

Charlie T. McTernan et al.

Summary: The field of metallosupramolecular chemistry has made rapid progress in recent years, focusing on the formation of hollow self-assembled metalorganic structures and their applications in confining nanospaces. However, most of the structures studied so far exhibit high symmetry, which limits their ability to interact with asymmetrical biomolecules and synthetic compounds. Therefore, the design of lower-symmetry metal-organic structures is necessary to bind, sense, separate, and transform such substrates.

Visible-Light-Responsive Self-Assembled Complexes: Improved Photoswitching Properties by Metal Ion Coordination

Ray G. DiNardi et al.

Summary: A photoswitchable ligand based on azobenzene is self-assembled with palladium(II) ions to form a [Pd-2(E-L)(4)](4+) cage. Irradiation with 470 nm light results in the nearly complete transformation to a monomeric species [Pd(Z-L)(2)](2+), which can be reversed by irradiation with 405 nm light or heat.
