An Exception to the Carothers Equation Caused by the Accelerated Chain Extension in a Pd/Ag Cocatalyzed Cross Dehydrogenative Coupling Polymerization

Liwen Xing et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanistic study of Pd/Ag cocatalyzed cross dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) polymerization reveals that the second chain extension cross-coupling is more efficient than the first cross-coupling, which goes against the Carothers equation. Kinetic analyses and DFT calculations provide insights into the reasons behind this phenomenon, which has implications for the synthesis of molecules where C-H bond activation may be the limiting factor.

General Design Strategy of Anti-aromatic Porphyrinoids

Xiaoning Zhan et al.

Summary: A systematic investigation on arranging typical anti-aromatic porphyrinoids in sequence was conducted, and six rules were summarized to obtain high-performance anti-aromatic porphyrinoids. These rules include adding/removing atoms on the electron current ring flowing pipe, increasing the number of pyrrole/thiophen/furan units, selecting heteroatoms in a specific order, avoiding C-C=C-C unit, avoiding crowded environment in the core space, and preferring circular skeleton.

A cyclopenta-fused dibenzo[b,d]thiophene-co-phenanthrene macrocyclic tetraradicaloid

Xuefeng Lu et al.

Summary: A novel cyclopenta-fused macrocyclic tetraradicaloid, MC4-S, containing alternating phenanthrene and dibenzo[b,d]thiophene units, was synthesized and characterized. The two sulfur atoms in MC4-S lead to a smaller radical character and a larger singlet-triplet energy gap compared to its all-carbon isoelectronic structure, CPTP-M. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed stronger spin-spin coupling through the DBTh unit than through the Phen moiety. The presence of electron-rich sulfur atoms raised the energies of both the HOMO and LUMO in MC4-S, while overall optical and electronic energy gaps remained similar to CPTP-M.

Single-molecule conductance of dibenzopentalenes: antiaromaticity and quantum interference

Maximilian Schmidt et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of antiaromaticity and destructive quantum interference on charge transport through dibenzo-[a,e]pentalene (DBP). It is found that 5,10-connectivity leads to high single-molecule conductance, while 2,7-connectivity results in low conductance due to destructive quantum interference. Comparison between 5,10-DBP, phenyl, and anthracene analogues shows that despite anthracene having a larger HOMO-LUMO gap, 5,10-DBP exhibits higher conductance due to unfavorable level alignment.
