Current status of microbes involved in the degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) pollutants in the aquatic ecosystem

Mathiyazhagan Narayanan et al.

Summary: Contamination of aquatic systems with pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and other micro-pollutants is a major problem for the earth's ecosystem and health. These pollutants are found in various water environments and have harmful effects on the environment and organisms. Microbial degradation of these pollutants is inefficient, but certain microbial species have the ability to degrade them.

Associations of environmental phthalate exposure with male steroid hormone synthesis and metabolism: An integrated epidemiology and toxicology study

Meiping Tian et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between urinary phthalate metabolites and altered male steroid hormone synthesis and metabolism. The results showed that DEHP metabolites were the main contributor to the decline in hormone synthesis, and environmentally relevant phthalate exposures were associated with both altered steroid synthesis and excretion, providing insights into the endocrine-disrupting potential of phthalates.

Tracking the historical urban and rural sources of fecal pollution in a South American tropical semi-arid region using sterols and endocrine-disrupting chemicals

Felipe R. Santos et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the presence of sterols and endocrine-disrupting chemicals in sediment cores from the Jaguaribe river in a semi-arid region of Brazil. The results showed that mangrove forests play an important role in contributing organic matter to the study area. Fecal pollution was detected in both cores, with coprostanol showing higher concentrations in the upper layers. Estrogenic hormones, particularly estriol and estrone, were found in abundance and were likely related to livestock activities. The baseline levels of fecal sterols and estrogen hormones found in this study can be used for future evaluations of fecal pollution.
