Accelerating Ozonolysis Reactions Using Supplemental RF-Activation of Ions in a Linear Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer

Berwyck L. J. Poad et al.

Summary: Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions provide valuable structural insights in analytical applications. However, the slow reaction rates limit their widespread use. In this study, a supplementary RF-activation method is used to accelerate the rate of ion-molecule reactions involving ozone. The accelerated reaction rates increase sample throughput and enable identification of low abundance lipid isomers, expanding the range of lipid species that can be analyzed.

Summary: A novel analytical method was developed in this study for the comprehensive analysis of fatty acids (FAs). The method allowed for relative quantification, carbon-carbon double-bond localization, and cis-/trans-geometry differentiation of FAs. The developed high-throughput platform has potential applications in biological and clinical studies.

Apocryphal FADS2 activity promotes fatty acid diversification in cancer

Reuben S. E. Young et al.

Summary: Canonical fatty acid metabolism describes specific enzyme-substrate interactions resulting in well-defined products. Profiling of lipids in prostate cancer cell lines revealed unusual unsaturated fatty acids not described by canonical pathways. Direct desaturation of fatty acids by FADS2 generated new unsaturated fatty acid families rarely reported in human-derived cells, with functional roles in membrane structure and signaling.
