Summary: Administration of dexmedetomidine during and after general anesthesia for cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass reduced the rate of postoperative delirium, as well as shortened the lengths of stay in the intensive care unit and hospital.

Propofol plus low-dose dexmedetomidine infusion and postoperative delirium in older patients undergoing cardiac surgery

Mona Momeni et al.

Summary: Adding low-dose dexmedetomidine to a sedative regimen based on propofol did not reduce the risk of in-hospital delirium in older patients undergoing cardiac surgery. However, patients in the dexmedetomidine group spent less time in a delirious state, while the median administered postoperative norepinephrine was significantly higher in this group compared to the placebo group.

Nocturnal dexmedetomidine alleviates post-intensive care syndrome following cardiac surgery: a prospective randomized controlled clinical trial

Summary: This study found that prophylactic nocturnal administration of Dexmedetomidine significantly reduced the incidence of PICS following cardiac surgery, particularly reducing the occurrence of psychological impairments. However, this treatment was also associated with a higher rate of hypotension.

Summary: Dexmedetomidine did not show protective effects on the lungs, but inhibited elevation of serum MDA level, indicative of anti-oxidative stress property, and improved urine output and lower requirements of vasopressors.
