Association of Socioeconomic Characteristics With Where Children Receive Emergency Care

Summary: The study found that children in lower-income neighborhoods tended to receive care in pediatric EDs with lower volume, with urban-rural differences playing a key role in this association. Publicly insured children were more likely to visit higher-volume pediatric EDs than privately insured and uninsured children both before and after adjusting for patient-level factors.

Association of County-Level Poverty and Inequities With Firearm-Related Mortality in US Youth

Summary: This study revealed a link between youth firearm-related mortality rates and county-level poverty concentration. A multidimensional approach to reduce poverty and firearm-related deaths is urgently needed, considering more than half of firearm-related deaths and two-thirds of firearm-related homicides may be associated with living in a high poverty concentration area.

Reporting of Participant Race and Ethnicity in Published US Pediatric Clinical Trials From 2011 to 2020

Summary: This cross-sectional study examined participant race and ethnicity in pediatric clinical trials published from 2011 to 2020. The study found that reporting of participant race and ethnicity increased over time, but was still underreported. Disparities were identified in the enrollment of American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander children compared to the respective US populations. However, there was greater representation of Black/African American children in the trials, suggesting inclusive research practices that could be extended to other historically disenfranchised racial and ethnic groups.

However, the burden of air pollution exposure is not equally distributed, with communities of color and people in poverty being at increased risk of exposure to pollution and morbidity from asthma and allergies due to social and environmental factors.
