Summary: Arterial stiffness refers to the increased rigidity of the arterial wall due to biological aging and certain diseases. Studies have shown that parameters measuring arterial stiffness, particularly pulse-wave velocity, can predict cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Statin therapy, besides lowering lipids, also has beneficial effects on arterial elasticity by reducing inflammation, proliferation, oxidative stress, and thrombosis, as well as improving endothelial function and stabilizing atherosclerotic plaque.
