Stenotrophomonas maltophilia outbreak with a commercial blood gas injector as the culprit and interventions for source and prevention: A possible passage between patient and ECMO water heater device

Sirin Menekse et al.

Summary: Despite its low virulence, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a leading drug-resistant bacteria. We report a large outbreak of S. maltophilia infection associated with a commercial needleless blood gas injector. Molecular analysis revealed 12 distinct genotypes, with 58 strains related to the blood gas injectors. Surveillance of unexpected sources and routine sampling of ECMO water reservoirs should be implemented to prevent infection spread.

Sphingomonas paucimobilis Outbreak a Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Hospital: Epidemiological Investigation and Literature Review of an Emerging Healthcare-Associated Infection

Feyza Nur Askin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed concurrent S. paucimobilis bacteremia cases, treatment outcomes, potential outbreak sources, and antimicrobial resistance profiles. The findings indicated that S. paucimobilis was present in the hospital's water system and susceptible to carbapenems and quinolones. ALL patients were more prone to be affected, and it could lead to severe infections and even death.

Heater-Cooler Devices and Risk of Contamination during Cardiac Surgery

Mirko Kaluza et al.

Summary: The study investigated microbial contamination in new Heater-cooler devices (HCDs) used in cardiothoracic surgery, finding that despite decontamination procedures, microbial growth was identified in all devices over time. However, airborne transmission of microorganisms directly from the HCD to the operating field appears unlikely.

A fatal case of early prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) - Sphingomonas paucimobilis

Aninka Saboe et al.

Summary: S. paucimobilis is an emerging pathogen causing severe infections, especially in the context of multidrug-resistant hospital-associated infections. Early prosthetic valve endocarditis associated with S. paucimobilis infection may lead to fatal outcomes.
