The herbarium of the future

Summary: With over 400 million specimens in more than 3000 herbaria worldwide, these resources are crucial for understanding past and predicting future plant distributions, as well as assessing their conservation status. The digitization and online interlinking of these specimens are creating an open access 'global metaherbarium', attracting new users and enabling innovative scientific applications such as e-monographs, species identification algorithms, and ecological studies at large scales. These developments also highlight the value of herbaria in addressing broader societal issues through the beauty of plants and the collection of diverse trait data.
