Turbulence characteristics of the ship air-wake with two different topside arrangements and inflow conditions

Heri Setiawan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) and vessel topside arrangement on ship air-wake flow. Experimental results show that ABL inflow increases flow fluctuations and reduces the length of the wake, while also enhancing turbulence energy on the ship landing deck. The topside arrangement, particularly the hangar elevation upstream of the landing deck, plays a crucial role in the air-wake over the ship center line.

Yaw effect on bi-stable air-wakes of a generic ship using large eddy simulation

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducted an LES investigation at Re = 8 X 10(4) to predict the flow past a simplified frigate shape model with a double backward-facing step at the stern. A double bi-stable flow configuration was observed at 0 yaw, with asymmetrical flow topologies behind each step affected by the incoming flow direction and the length of each step. Yawing the incoming flow with small angles led to increased asymmetry, while larger yaw angles suppressed the asymmetrical flow topology on both steps.

Time-Resolved Ship Airwake Measurements in a Simulated Atmospheric Boundary Layer

Dhuree Seth et al.

Summary: The study conducted in a low-speed wind tunnel on the unsteady flows over the stern of a Simple Frigate Shape 2 ship model revealed large regions of flow separation and wall-normal flows over the flight deck, with particularly high turbulence intensities. The measurements also showed asymmetric, intermittent flow near the deck walls and fluctuations in the recirculation region, along with shear layers and counterrotating vortices at the corners and edges of the flight deck. Energy spectrum analysis and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition indicated low-frequency coherent structures near the flight deck and at a large scale in the airwake.
