Phosphorus fractions and iron oxides responsible for the variations in the Cd retention capacity in tropical soil aggregates under different cropping patterns

Dengxiu Wei et al.

Summary: The behavior of Cd in soil is closely related to food security and soil environmental pollution, and its relationship with P fractions and Fe oxides in different cropping patterns was investigated. Citrus plantations showed the highest ratios of P and Fe overlapping with Cd in microaggregates. Humic P and labile organic P greatly contributed to the sorptivity of Cd2+ in soil aggregates, while Fe oxides had a more significant contribution. Amorphous ferric oxide had the most significant contribution to the sorption of Cd2+ in different-sized soil aggregates.

The Adsorption and Aging Process of Cadmium and Chromium in Soil Micro-aggregates

Lijia Wen et al.

Summary: The particle size and components of soil aggregates play important roles in the migration and transformation of heavy metals. This study focused on the adsorption behavior and aging characteristics of cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) in various granular aggregates and soil components. The results showed that clay aggregates had the strongest adsorption effect on Cd and Cr. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic adsorption studies provided insights into the adsorption processes of Cd and Cr in soil aggregates, and the forms of Cd and Cr transformed from unstable to stable after entering the soil.

Effects of competitive adsorption with Ni(II) and Cu(II) on the adsorption of Cd(II) by modified biochar co-aged with acidic soil

Zhuowen Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of competitive adsorption with Ni(II) and Cu(II) on the adsorption of Cd(II) by modified biochar co-aged with acidic soil. The results showed that competitive adsorption weakened the improvement of modification on the adsorption performance of modified biochar. Co-aging with soil further decreased the adsorption capacities of biochars for Cd(II).

Direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions under conventional, organic, and conservation agriculture

Mariela Fuentes Ponce et al.

Summary: Farm activities contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly from carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. This research investigates direct and indirect emissions in different agroecosystems and finds that CO2 is the primary gas contributing to emissions. Agroecosystems with reduced tillage and synthetic inputs have the highest emissions, while organic systems have the lowest.

The influence of native soil organic matter and minerals on ferrous iron oxidation

Chunmei Chen et al.

Summary: Organic matter retards Fe(II) oxidation rates, while pre-existing Fe (oxyhydr)oxides play a significant role in catalyzing Fe(II) oxidation. Non-extractable soil minerals after removing Fe (oxyhydr)oxides have only a minor effect on oxidation rates.

Changes in soil available cadmium and bacterial communities after fallowing depend on contamination levels

Xinqi Wang et al.

Summary: Fallowing significantly decreased available Cd and phosphorus content in lightly contaminated soils, but increased ammonium nitrogen; only P variables changed significantly in heavily contaminated soils. Fallowing also significantly decreased bacterial Shannon diversity in lightly contaminated soils and altered bacterial community composition in heavily contaminated soils, with no impact on archaeal or fungal communities.

Immobilization of cadmium in contaminated soils using sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron: Effectiveness and remediation mechanism

Yiqing Guo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) can efficiently remove Cd from soil by converting it into less available forms, with minimal impact of soil pH on the immobilization of Cd. Cd was successfully enriched on S-nZVI with distribution closely related to Fe, S, and O, and CdO and CdS were identified as key products for Cd immobilization in soil.

Nitrogen fertilizer management affects remobilization of the immobilized cadmium in soil and its accumulation in crop tissues

Jun-Feng Wang et al.

Summary: The immobilization of soil cadmium is a commonly used strategy for remediation in Cd-contaminated arable soil. However, Cd can be remobilized through acid-soluble and complexation effects. This study found that using nitrate form of nitrogen fertilizer was more effective in preventing the remobilization of immobilized Cd and accumulation of Cd in crops in Cd-contaminated soil compared to the ammonium form.

Strategies for reducing cadmium accumulation in rice grains

Babar Hussain et al.

Summary: The high concentration of toxic heavy metal cadmium in paddy soils and its subsequent accumulation in rice grains and the food chain is a global environmental issue. Understanding the soil properties that affect the uptake and translocation of Cd in rice can help reduce its accumulation in grains. While various management practices exist to remediate Cd from contaminated soil, practical application is limited. Controlling soil pH and redox potential can reduce the translocation of Cd from soil to rice roots, and developing genotypes restricting Cd uptake can reduce its accumulation in rice grains.

Occurrence of antibiotic resistome in farmland soils near phosphorus chemical industrial area

Jian-Hua Cheng et al.

Summary: The study found variations of heavy metals, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and microbiome in the soil surrounding a phosphorus chemical industrial zone. The primary factors controlling the distribution of ARGs were cadmium (Cd) and MGEs levels, with a stronger direct effect of Cd on ARG abundance compared to its indirect effect.
