Effects of DEM Depression Filling on River Drainage Patterns and Surface Runoff Generated by 2D Rain-on-Grid Scenarios

Pierfranco Costabile et al.

Summary: Traditionally, topographic depressions in Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) were considered as artifacts and removed completely prior to modeling. However, the effects of depression filling on river network structure and surface runoff were not clear. This study used 2D hydrodynamic modeling to evaluate these effects and found that removing depressions from DEMs is unnecessary and they should be taken into account in simulating drainage patterns and hydrologic response.

Behind the efficiency of border irrigation: Lesson learned in Northern Italy

Daniele Masseroni et al.

Summary: Border irrigation, an ancient and widely used method, has been analyzed through extensive monitoring. The study examines the actual performance of border irrigation in different experimental fields and evaluates its water use efficiency. The findings highlight the impact of flow rate, irrigation scheduling, and plot slope on water use efficiency. These results provide important insights for improving border irrigation management and enhancing water use efficiency.

2D hydrodynamic approach supporting evaluations of hydrological response in small watersheds: Implications for lag time estimation

Giuseppe Barbero et al.

Summary: The use of integrated flood models, which simulate the hydrodynamic and hydrological response to rainfall events, is gaining interest in the literature. This study focuses on lag time estimation and examines the variability of lag time in small basins using a 2D-SWEs model. The hydrologic response of small catchments is described by characteristic times influencing the hydrodynamic response. The proposed approach is validated using synthetic rainfall-runoff scenarios and observed data, showing reasonably good agreement with estimations of the lag time.

A combined model approach to optimize surface irrigation practice: SWAP and WinSRFR

Seyed Abdollah Alavi et al.

Summary: Surface irrigation worldwide is inefficient and needs optimization. Current models only provide information on how to irrigate, without considering when to irrigate. This study uses two models to determine optimal irrigation practices for sugarcane cultivation in southwestern Iran. The results show that optimization can result in 63% water conservation and a 22% increase in sugarcane yield.

Is HEC-RAS 2D accurate enough for storm-event hazard assessment? Lessons learnt from a benchmarking study based on rain-on-grid modelling

Pierfranco Costabile et al.

Summary: Rain-on-Grid (RoG) modelling is a popular approach in storm risk management, but systematic benchmarking studies of software packages like HEC-RAS 2D (HR2D) are lacking. This paper introduces the novelty of benchmarking HR2D for RoG simulations and provides evidence of its potential and limitations to increase model accuracy.

Evaluating the Performance of Agricultural Water Distribution Systems Using FIS, ANN and ANFIS Intelligent Models

Habibeh Sharifi et al.

Summary: This study developed a systematic approach to evaluate the technical performance of agricultural water distribution systems using FIS, ANN, and ANFIS models. The findings show that the ANFIS model considers model uncertainties reliably and can be used to evaluate the performance of agricultural water systems.

A 2D-SWEs framework for efficient catchment-scale simulations: Hydrodynamic scaling properties of river networks and implications for non-uniform grids generation

Pierfranco Costabile et al.

Summary: The application of 2D-SWEs in rainfall-runoff simulations at the catchment scale offers advanced flood mapping studies and hazard assessment, as well as innovative tools for analyzing river drainage networks. By studying the characteristics of river networks and the relationship between specific discharge thresholds and total areas of network cells, a heuristic process for non-uniform grid generation has been developed to detect hydrodynamically active areas in basins.

Performance Comparison between Semi-Lagrangian and Eulerian Numerical Solutions for Two-Dimensional Surface Flows in Basin Irrigation

Jintao Liu et al.

Summary: A semi-Lagrangian numerical solution was developed for efficient simulation of surface shallow-water flows in large-scale basin irrigation. This solution showed lower mass conservation ability but higher computational efficiency compared to the existing Eulerian method, making it more suitable for practical applications.
