How Do Farmers Learn from Extension Services? Evidence from MalawiJEL codes

Annemie Maertens et al.

Summary: This study, based on a quasi-randomized controlled trial and panel data, found that farmers' beliefs about potential yields are influenced by first-hand and local experience, which significantly impacts their learning efforts. Farmers who participated in season-long, farmer-led demonstration plot cultivation were more willing to adopt new multi-component technology compared to those who attended only field-day events.

Encouraging technology adoption using ICTs and farm trials in Senegal: Lessons for gender equity and scaled impact

Rachel C. Voss et al.

Summary: Empirical evidence on the impact of ICT-enabled extension in promoting agricultural inputs remains scarce, with the study finding that the forms and format of ICT-enabled extension services did not significantly contribute to technology uptake. However, personal connections to farm trials and phone-based voice messaging show potential to increase technology adoption. Gender disparities and limitations in seed production and distribution systems in Senegal were identified as key factors restricting the effectiveness of the project.

Adoption of agricultural technology in the developing world: A meta-analysis of the empirical literature

Sacha Ruzzante et al.

Summary: This study investigates factors influencing adoption of agricultural technologies across different contexts. Variables such as farmer education, household size, land size, access to credit, and organization membership are positively correlated with adoption. However, determinants vary widely by technology, cultural context, and geography, suggesting a need for tailored approaches to promote agricultural technologies in the developing world.

Adoption pathway analysis: Representing the dynamics and diversity of adoption for agricultural practices

Oscar Montes de Oca Munguia et al.

Summary: The study introduces a method called adoption pathways analysis to better represent and analyze the dynamics and diversity of adoption in agriculture. By conducting a survey to define individual decisions at different stages of adoption and creating flow diagrams, the research illustrates how the current use status for agricultural practices is the result of individual adoption journeys. The findings demonstrate different pathways taken by farmers, providing insights into adoption and potential barriers for each practice.
