Microglial phagocytosis of neurons in neurodegeneration, and its regulation

Claire A. Butler et al.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that excessive microglial phagocytosis of live neurons and synapses contributes to neurodegeneration in animal models of various brain diseases. Factors regulating microglial phagocytosis of neurons could be potential treatment targets to prevent neurodegeneration induced by excessive microglial phagocytosis of live neurons and synapses.

SynapseJ: An Automated, Synapse Identification Macro for ImageJ

Juan Felipe Moreno Manrique et al.

Summary: This study presents a macro for analyzing multi-channel, z-stack confocal images using open-source software ImageJ or FIJI to assist in identifying synapses. By analyzing pre-synaptic and different post-synaptic markers, inhibitory synapses were identified in specific brain regions. Systematic parameter variations were utilized to determine the most critical parameters for analysis.

The microglial P2Y6 receptor mediates neuronal loss and memory deficits in neurodegeneration

Mar Puigdellivol et al.

Summary: The P2Y(6) receptor plays a key role in mediating microglial phagocytosis of neurons induced by A beta and tau, leading to neuronal and memory loss. Knockout of this receptor could potentially be beneficial in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

The Phagocytic Code Regulating Phagocytosis of Mammalian Cells

Tom O. J. Cockram et al.

Summary: Mammalian phagocytes can eat other mammalian cells in the body based on specific signals, and understanding the phagocytic code could lead to novel therapies for various diseases involving faulty phagocytosis.
