Scaling CO2 convection in confined aquifers: Effects of dispersion, permeability anisotropy and geochemistry

Hamidreza Erfani et al.

Summary: Solubility trapping of carbon dioxide (CO2) in deep saline aquifers is an effective mechanism for carbon storage. This study investigates the scaling relations of convective mixing in the dissolution of CO2 in aquifer brine. The results provide new insights into the factors affecting the dissolution flux and onset time of convection, which are important for the prioritization and selection of appropriate aquifers for geological CO2 storage.

Effects of impurities H2S and N2 on CO2 migration and dissolution in sedimentary geothermal reservoirs

Ying Yu et al.

Summary: The study shows that at higher reservoir temperatures, the impurity N-2 has a smaller promotion effect on the migration of gas phase, but still accelerates cooling in the reservoir. The deviations in gas phase migration velocity and CO2 dissolution efficiency caused by 10 mol% N-2 are less than 12%, while 10 mol% N-2 can increase the total heat absorbed from the reservoir by at least 40%. This indicates that N-2 has the potential to significantly benefit a CO2 plume geothermal system without distinct risks. Additionally, it is found that CO2 dissolution efficiency can be increased and decreased by H2S and N-2 through partitioning phenomenon, respectively.

Dynamics of CO2 Density-Driven Flow in Carbonate Aquifers: Effects of Dispersion and Geochemistry

Hamidreza Erfani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the process of CO2 dissolution in deep saline aquifers through numerical simulations, and highlights the importance of considering hydrodynamic dispersion and multispecies geochemical reactions. Results indicate that accounting for hydrodynamic dispersion can increase the CO2 dissolution flux and decrease the convection onset time, while geochemical reactions can enhance long-term efficiency but reduce total sequestered carbon during the diffusion-dominated period. The study emphasizes the significance of realistic geochemical representation and the spatial and temporal dependence of reactions for detailed simulation of the CO2 storage process.

Coupling effects of native H2S and different co-injected impurities on CO2 sequestration in layered saline aquifers

Didi Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the intricate issue of impurity effects in CO2 geological storage, particularly focusing on the coupling effects of pre-dissolved H2S and co-injected impurities (H2S, CH4, and N-2) on CO2 sequestration. The results showed that the native H2S had a more profound impact on CO2 sequestration compared to the co-injected impurities.
