Three-dimensional distribution of ions and electrons in the lunar ionosphere originated from the photochemical reactions

K. M. Ambili et al.

Summary: Using a numerical photochemical model, the distribution of ions and electrons in the lunar ionosphere solely from photochemical reactions is investigated. The model suggests that the interaction between solar wind and lunar plasma affects the characteristics of the lunar ionosphere, leading to the removal of positive ions and negligible presence of plasma.

A theoretical assessment of the feasibility of potential Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter radio occultation observations of the lunar ionosphere

Paul Withers et al.

Summary: The existence of a dense lunar ionosphere has been controversial, with discrepancies between measured and predicted electron densities. Observations from the LRO spacecraft may help to address this issue, with reliable detections of the lunar ionosphere possible through averaging multiple LRO profiles.
