Environmental effects of China's coal ban policy: Results from in situ observations and model analysis in a typical rural area of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, China

Dongsheng Ji et al.

Summary: Coal-to-clean energy programs can improve air quality and public health in rural areas. This study observed the effects of a coal ban in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region of China and found that the PM2.5 concentrations decreased in rural areas after the ban. Additionally, the reduction in total carbon and PM2.5 concentrations was greater in areas with a coal ban than in non-banned areas. The study also discussed the contributions of the coal ban policy and meteorology to these changes.

Impact of weather and emission changes on NO2 concentrations in China during 2014-2019

Yang Shen et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively analyzed the spatiotemporal variations of NO2 concentrations in China and 12 urban agglomerations, showing the anthropogenic and meteorological factors controlling the interannual variations of NO2. Different urban agglomerations exhibit different trends in NO2 interannual variations, primarily dominated by emission changes, with weather conditions also playing a significant role. The study provides basic understanding on the current situation of NO2 pollution and is helpful for policymakers and those interested in the study of tropospheric ozone changes in China and downwind areas.

Mapping anthropogenic emissions in China at 1 km spatial resolution and its application in air quality modeling

Bo Zheng et al.

Summary: New challenges are emerging in fine-scale air quality modeling in China due to a lack of high-resolution emission maps. A new accurate high-resolution emission mapping approach reduces the modeled biases of air pollutant concentrations in densely populated areas, thus improving the assessment of population exposure.

City-level air quality improvement in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region from 2016/17 to 2017/18 heating seasons: Attributions and process analysis

Yibo Zhang et al.

Summary: The implementation of clean air strategies has led to observed reductions in PM2.5 pollution in the 2 + 26 cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. Both emission reductions and favorable meteorological conditions contributed to the decrease in PM2.5 concentrations in the BTH2+26 cities. Residential sources were the main driver of PM2.5 reductions, with emission controls and local sources playing significant roles in improving air quality.

Revealing the sulfur dioxide emission reductions in China by assimilating surface observations in WRF-Chem

Tie Dai et al.

Summary: This study developed a new emission inversion system to dynamically update the sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions grid by grid over China by assimilating ground-based hourly SO2 observations, resulting in a significant decline in SO2 emission over China since 2010. The reduced SO2 emission led to a decrease in sulfate and PM2.5 surface concentrations by up to 10 μg/m³ over central China, indicating the effectiveness of the newly developed emission inversion system.

A 6-year-long (2013-2018) high-resolution air quality reanalysis dataset in China based on the assimilation of surface observations from CNEMC

Lei Kong et al.

Summary: The study presents a 6-year-long high-resolution Chinese air quality reanalysis dataset that contains surface fields of six conventional air pollutants in China from 2013 to 2018. The dataset, obtained through assimilation of surface observations, exhibits excellent performance in reproducing the magnitude and variability of surface air pollutants.
