Trifluoroethanol as a Unique Additive for the Chemoselective Electrooxidation of Enamines to Access Unsymmetrically Substituted NH-Pyrroles

Mrinmay Baidya et al.

Summary: An electrochemical method for synthesizing unsymmetrically substituted NH-pyrroles is described, involving a challenging heterocoupling process between structurally diverse enamines using trifluoroethanol (TFE) to tune oxidation potential. Computational studies show TFE plays a unique role in promoting the heterocoupling by regulating activation energies. The developed protocol is equally efficient for homocoupling enamines to form symmetric pyrroles.

Photons or Electrons? A Critical Comparison of Electrochemistry and Photoredox Catalysis for Organic Synthesis

Nicholas E. S. Tay et al.

Summary: Redox processes play a crucial role in synthetic methods involving electrochemistry and photoredox catalysis. Both approaches offer access to high energy intermediates that allow for unconventional bond formations. However, while they provide similar intermediates, electrochemistry and photoredox catalysis differ in their physical chemistry principles. Understanding these differences is essential for designing new transformations and bond disconnections.

DMSO as a C1 Source for [2+2+1] Pyrazole Ring Construction via Metal-Free Annulation with Enaminones and Hydrazines

Haijin Guo et al.

Summary: The synthesis of 1,4-disubstituted pyrazoles was successfully achieved through a cascade reaction between enaminones, hydrazines, and DMSO catalyzed by molecular iodine in the presence of Selectfluor. DMSO played a dual role as the C-1 source and the reaction medium, and the synthesis of 1,3,4-trisubstituted pyrazoles using aldehydes as alternative C-1 building blocks was also accomplished.

Anodic Oxidation of Aminotetrazoles: A Mild and Safe Route to Isocyanides

Matthew C. Leech et al.

Summary: A new electrochemical method has been developed to prepare isocyanides from readily available aminotetrazole derivatives, which can tolerate a wide range of functional groups. Additionally, it was demonstrated that isocyanides can also be obtained through chemical oxidation, providing access to these compounds for those without electrosynthesis equipment. The feasibility of scaling up production using flow electrochemistry, as well as the potential use of electrochemically generated isocyanides in further reactions, has been also demonstrated.

Electrochemically driven stereoselective approach to syn-1,2-diol derivatives from vinylarenes and DMF

Da Sol Chung et al.

Summary: An electrochemically driven strategy has been developed for the stereoselective synthesis of protected syn-1,2-diols from vinylarenes using N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). This approach eliminates the need for transition metal catalysts or external oxidizing agents, providing a simple and efficient route to a variety of protected syn-1,2-diols in a single step. The reaction proceeds through electrooxidation of olefin, followed by a nucleophilic attack of DMF, ultimately resulting in a predominantly syn-diastereoselective product.
